We just adopted two Rex's today :) They are so adorable (as all of the other ones of course). One of them is a creamy/brown color but his eyes...they are scarlet! Is this normal? I've never seen a rat that wasn't an albino that red based eyes. You can kind of see it in his drinking picture. And his fur almost has a red hue to it, it doesn't look like mucus. And his cagemate has a chunk out of his ear from a jerk-face ratter :( But they are both so awesome and I'm glad we were able to bring them home.

Rat eyes come in three colours... Black, red/pink (like albinos or PEWs) and ruby. Your boy has ruby eyes and it's a very common colour.

For the most part, rats with a certain colour coat have the same colour eyes. (Beige rats have ruby eyes, Himalayan have pink, black hooded rats have black.) There are some exceptions, like black-eyed whites, but they are few and far between. I think the AFRMA site has a fair amount of info on rat markings and colours if you are interested.

Moony moon, red and ruby are actually the 2 that are the same.

Ruby can range from very light to very dark.

for eg. a siamese genetically has lighter ruby eyes

but a beige can have quite the range of ruby, even within a family.

Some call pink red, so depending on who you ask there are pink, ruby, and black, or red, ruby, and black.

I think your rats are beautiful. In general, when coat colors are lightened, the rats lose pigmentation in the eyes too and not just the fur. This explains it very well in lay mans terms.

I have a house full of dark ruby's, to the point where you would think they are black eyes until they move a certain way. I have an odd eye boy who had a dark ruby eye and a red eye. Even my Himi (Cas) had dark ruby eyes, and my siamese boy Bobby has dark ruby. I'd love to have a bright red or pink eyed boy  You have a couple of cuties there!!
