That video is showing a rat with what we call hiccups. Some believe it's a symptom of myco while others can't make the connection. I've had plenty of rats do the "hiccup" and not be sick after all.

So what is myco? lol sorry i am not up on the lingo :S And you are saying that this hiccup is essentially harmless?

Some of mine do that silent hiccup too and they are totally fine. If it's just that with no other symptoms, don't worry.

Thanks so much for the help and information guys. I guess I gave myself a scare and got all worked up over what I hope is nothing. I will update tomorrow! Stay tuned :)

Dont worry about it Chelle! I could have PMed people but I as too worked up to think about that.

Do you have any suggestions on a good vet within Guelph? This whole thing is getting me in gear with finding a good one, now that my new apt is secured.

There really isn't a good rat vet in Guelph. The best one I know of in the area is Dr. Gerald at Mitchell Animal Hospital in Kitchener. Also I might have misread but did you say you were keeping them apart?

UPDATE!!

They seem to be slowly getting better. Last night after I turned the lights off they came out of their sleeping box like usual, and (from the sounds of it, as I cannot see!) did what they normally do, just a bit more reserved and cautious about it (ex: Gemini, who normally gives er on the wheel, just kinda walked on it). This morning, they did come to the door when I opened it, but wouldnt dare cross the threshold, when they normally run out and explore my room. They took and ate cheerios, which was different from yesterday, but they still seemed to be quite skittish. Libra woudl even flee at any semi-sudden movement. Still no signs of disease or injury.

Today after I got home from work a similar story to last night, with some improvemnts. Gemini and Libra would roam out, but only to my lap for a treat, and would then usually run back. I gave them a first: popcorn! (au naturel, of course), which they went nuts for. This seemed to perk them up. Libra voluntarily came to my lap for a snuggle. She is now on my bed, acting semi normal, roaming around, sniffing, attempting to chew cords, lol. She comes back to me more than normal, but for now I consider it a huge victory.

This got me thinking tho: Virgo seems largely unaffected by what is going on. Chelle and I assume that Libra and Gem are sisters. They seem to be fine in the cage, and will lick my hand, take food, etc, but freak out when I try to pick them up, and will hardly come outside the cage. On the bed Libra seems fine as well. I think it might be something at floor level that is freaking them out. Whatever it is it seems to be still occuring, since waiting a day didnt help that much. Could I be right?

Kitchener is definitely too far when I dont have a car! Lol

Yes I was keeping them apart when I thought it was a resp infection but now they are all back in the same cage, since they probably get more comfort out of that.

Even if it was a resp infection, you don't separate. It causes MUCH more stress and can make them even worse.

Dang, now I feel bad about the fact that I did have them separated :( It was only for an hour or so until I found out it likely wasnt an infection

Don't worry, that isn't long at all. I agree, you shouldn't have to separate them unless they get pretty ill and need a lot of extra care. But generally, they need their rat friends and cuddles. I try find a more gentle rattie to place with them if they are sick if the main cage is too much.

Something has definitely spooked them. You have to remember their vision is terrible but their sense of hearing and smell are very acute, so they may have picked up on something that you don't even notice. Some rats go absolutely rigid with fear over the smell of the cat/predator. When I was babysitting my sister's cat, my rats took days after he was gone to relax and come around. And some rats have NO issues whatsoever with cats and barely notice them.

Good to hear they seem to be getting better :)
I had an incident when my skin kids were about 4-5months old (I think) thought they were getting ill they hid a lot would not come out to see me...just not acting right...and the older girls were fine.
Turned out to be a balloon that was floating around the room and because there is ceiling fan going all the time it was moving the balloon around. I am sure they thought it was a bird or some sort of predator flying around...we tied the balloon into the corner and they settled after a day or so.
Then decided the balloon was not so scary and would attack the ribbon hanging from it and chase it around...
Good Luck hope they continue to improve.
