So I got home from work today and none of my girls were eager to meet me at the cage door as always. They did not come out when I opened the door, and were very skittish when I took them out, trying to run back in the cage. When I put them on the bed to inspect them for injuries (I thought there may have been a fight or something), all they wanted to do was cuddle into my neck (which is NOT like Gemini and Libra!!). There are no injuries, but Gem and Libras breathing was audible, which had hardly ever happened before, only in extreme stress (bath time, for example). The noise is hard to explain, but its kinda like a creaky door sound whenever they breathe, and they seemed to be breathing fast and hard. They also wont take a cheerio from my hand, or will take it but not eat it. They do not seem lethargic, just dont have the excitement they usually do.

Virgo I cannot hear breathing, but is skittish and down as well, though she is the chill one of the three, and doenst really come out of the cage on her own that often.

I first thought it was because I had been handling my friends new kittens that day, and that I smelled like cat and it freaked them out, so I washed my hands, removed my clothes from the room, and left them alone while I went to dinner. I just got back and there is no change.

The only thing that has changed lately (besides the kitten handling), is that they started chewing on their tissue box (could the ink harm them? Its royale brand), they have been hoarding a lot more (not just food now, but toys and even their dish towels). I have noticed that Libra has some ”coughing” episodes sometimes after she wakes up. It doesnt seem to bother her too much and goes away quickly. I was going to post this video tonight that I took this morning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4dWx-yecu8

The problem is I have not found a vet yet. Admittedly I havent looked beyond one small clinic, as I have been uber busy with apartment hunting lately. Its also a Sunday night, and I have no idea where to go!! Please give me advice on what this could be (with my two weeks of rat experience, I suspect resp infection). Anything would be helpful! I will be on all night to answer questions to clarify the situation.

Right now Virgo is in the cage, in her sleeping spot, Libra is in the carrier, and Gemini is buried in my bed sheets (SOOOOO not like her!). Libra and Gem I can sometimes hear breathing, Virgo is asleep. I am leaving them alone as to not cause more stress.

Sorry for the long post, I just want to get as many details out there as I could. I am really worried.

EDIT TO ADD: They also ate grapes for the first time last night, if that matters.

Please guys, I am freaking out and I dont know what to do at all! Should I call an emergency vet, or should I go to a vet tomorrow morning that knows rats better than the random on call vet? What could this be, and how can I help? I really need some advice here :sad3:

Put their chest to your ear and see if you can hear noises. If so it is probably a respiratory infection, you shouldn't generally be able to hear any noises when they breath.

I can hear breathing on all of them with my ear to the chest, tho Gem and Libra I can hear breathing sounds without putting my ear to the chest. I just tested this, then gave out cheerios, which all of them ate. More slowly, but at least they did.

It seems like when I put them somewhere, they stay there for a while before running where they want to go, which is very strange.

And thanks, rachael. :)

As for a vet, would it be a good idea to phone Chelle? If I'm right that's where these girlies came from so it might be best if she could direct you to a good vet.

They are estimated to be about 6 months.

I have tried to call the number on Chelles website, but her phone must be off or something. Is there another number I can call?

It sounds to me like they got spooked. Could there have been a loud noise or a new person come near them? If it is because they are spooked they will be stressed and breather harder. Give them a day to settle down. If they continue to be "off" then perhaps a vet visit might be justified.

edited to add: next time please don't hesitate to PM the mods and myself when it's an emergency. A lot of us don't regularly check all the forums but we do get notifications for PMs. :D

Anything new besides the kitten smells? Sometimes rats get scared at around that age. But if their breathing is off and in the video it looks like she's head bobbing I would go to the vet but not e-vet.

That video is showing a rat with what we call hiccups. Some believe it's a symptom of myco while others can't make the connection. I've had plenty of rats do the "hiccup" and not be sick after all.

I searched your location

Also as I previously said I don't think you need to rush them to an emergancy vet. Find a vet you are happy with incase it is a respiratory problem, but it could be they got a fright. It seems a bit odd that both of thm are 'sick' at the same time. I'd wait a couple of days, see if they continue to eat and how there breathing is. It might be nothing, and hopefully is nothing.

Just talked to my housemate and he says today was pretty normal. No loud noises or strange things (vacuuming, smoke detector, etc) that he knows of and he was home all day. Could the kitten or cat (I was also petting mama cat) smells do this?

Nothing out of the ordinary or new that I can think of besides what I mentioned. They met my friend on Friday but they were great then and yesterday as well.

I think I will wait a day and see if its still an issue. If it is I have time on Tuesday afternoon to go to a vet. Do you think I should make an appointment?

And doh I forgot about PMing people when I was so desperate for an answer.

I'd wait before making an appointment. Being skittish is usually not a symptom of illness but more so something spooked them. I remember once we had a similar post and it ended up being balloon near the cage. Once the balloons were removed, the rats were back to normal.
The cat smell can do it I suppose but I don't think it would be continuous.

Rachael, she linked a video in one of her posts.

Whoops - I completely missed your video. She doesn't look unhealthy either, her eyes are bright and her fur isn't puffed or anything. :)
