I received an email, from my cousin, regarding a dog that had to be euthanized after eating too many raisins. Apparently, raisins are toxic and can wreak serious havoc with some animals.

Does anyone know if this also pertains to our little four-footers???

My little guys aren't going to get any more raisins if that is the case!

I have heard that grapes are bad for dogs, but maybe it's only in large quantities. A large number of raisins would be like a huge number of grapes.

My ratties love grapes, but have never had large quantities and had them only occasionally. I have no idea what the toxin for dogs would be.

Raisins and grapes are toxic to dogs but so far have not heard anything about rats.
I don't give mine raisins, mostly though because it's full of sugar.

mmmm I'm not sure about toxicity... but I hardly give mine raisins anyway... which is really confusing, because despite giving them hardly any, a hell of a lot of them come out the other end!!

very funny starfoot

A vet I used to work for and I had talked about this topic one time, regarding dogs. He said that there wasn't too much conclusive information about just what made the grapes/raisins toxic... some people thought it was just certain batches, etc, or different types of grapes. I wonder.

Hey, we need a rat-raisin photo contest!! Let that be my brilliant contribution to the Forum today.

Now before you mock me, you've got to admit that we have a few photographers on this Forum who could do an artistic take on even a rat raisin!

Umm..... yeah.... I did actually take a picture of some particularly interesting looking rat raisins after the rats had eaten a bunch of carrots... I did mention the picture on the board, but managed to stop myself from posting it.

Grapes are supposed to be toxic to dogs in the same way that chocolate is. A couple bits here and there won't do more than to make them sick, but a handful has the potential to be seriously fatal.

Rats are omnivores, so right from the start they're nothing at all like dogs as far as internal processes go. Just as we'll get sick if we eat too many of anything, the same is true of them. Grapes do occur in the wild, as well as in planned fields, so depending on where the rat lives it would definitely be part of their food source in the wild. So no worries, unless they try and eat an entire bunch or something. I wouldn't wanna clean that cage. :sick2:

Raisins and grapes are very toxic to dogs. Same with chocolate, as most people know, and onions.

Raisins/grapes are known to cause acute renal (kidney) failure in dogs. A dog picking one up off the floor probably isn't going to hurt him, but it can take a very small serving (especially of raisins) to seriously harm them.

There's very little known about why the grapes cause this. So, stay away from giving your dogs grapes, k? And if you have a counter surfer at home, don't leave a bowl of grapes up there.
