Wednesday Chelle called me to ask if I could take her Maya into my vet for an abscess on her jaw. So Maya got an appointment and a drop off on Friday morning.

Poor little lady, had an infected bottom incisor, and she had to be gassed down, the tooth removed, a whole whack of causeous (cheesy) pus scraped out and sadly underneath that was tumours :sad3:. Dr Munn debulked and debrided as much tumour tissue as possible and we can only hope that it is a slow growing thing.

Maya's tooth was presented to me by Alyssa one of my favourite clinic staff, with big wide eyes "Where the heck did it fit in her head??? Its' HUUUUGE!" :laugh4: :laugh4:

Maya had a buprenorphine injection but her pica behaviour was minimal *whew*...trying to keep a rat whose imperative is to eat...well...everything...from doing so, can be a lot of fun.

Hahaha...good pica behaviour!! grabs a lab block piece and holds onto it :D

She was just waking up when I got there, so as soon as I got her home she got some baby cereal

She is doing great today  She spilled her breakfast so will need a new hammock and she just got a little steamed white fish and some peas which she inhaled. :giggle:

My vet just called and I found out that the girls who relayed the information hadn't quite got it all, so now I got it from the"horse's mouth"

Their was a lot of infection around the tooth, so it had to be gently removed so that the infection could be drained, the pus was gently scraped out and the hole slightly enlarged. A bead of each antibiotic (antibiotic beads) were inserted into the hole to help with any more infection. The infection was actually into her bone, which is a more likely fixable thing (osteomyelitis) but there is a possibility that it is tumours and that is not fixable. There was no debriding of tumors but of the mess inside the jaw.

Dr Munn says I should know if the antibiotic beads will work within 2 weeks...we both have our fingers crossed. Also, Maya may not need trims for the rest of her life as there is the lateral movement of the grinding down/bruxxing, and if those teeth stay aligned it should be fine.

Peta put this pic up on goose taken from Ratbehavior.org...it really helps you understand when teeth are involved how much trouble they can be. They are kind of like icebergs where the majority is hidden.

LOL. I love Alyssa, that sounds just like her, she's way too funny. :laugh4:

Maya had a puffy day but seemed ok just a bit off. Then on Wednesday night I came home from work to find her labouring the breathe..she was cold and when I listened to her lungs it sounded like her heart was making a big hard clunk,...nothing I had heard before!

I got her through the night and rushed her to Dr Munn in the morning. She was sedated and endoscoped again...pus cleaned out and then it was noticed that her molars on the left bottom side were a mess and they were removed (easily pulled out)... as well as another pus pocket cleaned out. It seems her lung issues were pain, so I am to stay on top of it with twice a day metacam, and buprenorphine injections as needed.

Poor Maya, we will know soon if it's tumours causing this mess or just osteomyelitis.

I have a bad pic of the endo of her molars so you can see the difference. The top is her right bottom molars which are fine.

Gah my poor baby :( I'm so sad that I can't be home with her at this time, but I'm so glad you could take her in while I was gone, Shel. Give her kisses as often as she'll tolerate it, okay? :D
