I may have lost my mind but since i am watching these girls stll struggle with breathing but seeing them actually up to eat and drink from the water bottle. I will take that as a improvement. Tomorrow I am taking two rats in for surgeries. I am going to ask the vet for some different meds to try the girls on.

Right now they are on gentamycin in the nebulizer. Baytril and clavamox twice a day.

I am looking for anything that may help them over this. If they were giving up the fight I would let them go but i see little improvements and cant help but think a different drug might be the answer.

I need to know what has worked, what may work and what you think I could or should try.

My girl recovered from pneumonia with Baytril and Zithro. Sending good thoughts to your sweeties.

:yeah:

The following is is what the vet had me give Sue. First we went to vet, confirmed pneumonia, placed her on Clavamox and vet gave her a shot of Convenia. No changes after 3 days or what seemed like months! Then she had me give her Baytril & Clavamox. Nada. I was getting frantic as Sue lost more weight and general health was poor, breathing was horrible!!! Finally talked vet into Baytril/Doxy, however, she only gave me enough for 2 weeks. Phoned Vet University Clinic in Regina, Sask for some sort of advice, very nice peeps! Phone Hamilton Vet College(?) talked to someone there and both agreed Baytril/Doxy for a month or Baytril/Zithro. Vet here said no. Went to another Vet in another town and explained my situation, Sue in tow. He gave me enough Baytril & Doxy for a month.

Long days of watching her and trying to get her to eat and all she wanted to do is sleep. Cried lots but kept watching. Today... she has gained most of her weight back no more breathing issues, lung fields sound clear (via Rat phoning). Two of my other rattums had to be treated with Baytril as well but it didn't get as bad with them as it was with Sue. I plied Sue with baby cereal (w/probiotics) and Ensure (w/probiotics). I even tried the Soy baby formula stuff. Baby food (jars) worked too.

Sorry for the long post! I just wanted to let you know you are never alone and whatever you feel is what you feel. Push, as best you can, for Baytril/Zithro or Doxy.

Sending tons of Healing Energy to the Girls!! :hugs:

The last Vet I went to told me I could nebulize the Baytril. I wonder if anyone else has done this?

I seen that but i am able to give it to my girls and the neublizer stresses them so.

I think I am going to ask for dex, doxy and zitho because they have been on baytril and it hasnt helped. Doxy worked for other things but I fear theirs is so progressed that it is needed a bigger punch.

and this has been the worse roller coaster ever. lol I am glad to know someone can relate.

Doxy is not as strong as Baytril, maybe you can ask the vet if Baytril, Doxy, and Zithro can be given together? Doxy's good because if helps fight the myco, but it doesn't fight much else.

:yeah: ABSOLUTELY!

Victoria is right regarding the combo possibility! I was a total basket case when I went through this with Sue! Heck! I am evening having sympathy anxiety attacks for you! The weekends were the worst for me just waiting for the vet to open up on Mondays!

Just hang in there!! :hugs:

Edit: Nebulizing freaked Sue out and I thought the stress alone from that set her back a couple of weeks!!
