quote: PMI Brand Assault Rat Pellets is a rat poison. / I did a quick google and it looks like there's a PMI LabDiet for rats.
Ok, that's kind of disturbing....
Maybe it's like SARS being a dreaded disease / and SARS being Small Animal Rescue Site?

Ahhh, thank you.
I was able to find their website, the food doesn't look that great. 22% protein, corn first ingredient.
Ah well, it was worth a shot!

I fed my rats the LabDiet a few years ago. I was not happy with it. The protein levels too high and I often had to return it because the blocks were green.

Lauren... that's so funny that you mention that because SARS the illness was right in our neck of the woods, so each time I see it, it always gives me a bit of a jolt. lol

Eww, I wonder what was wrong with it.

Mold. I was buying my food at a farm/feed store and I guess the bags would get wet and sitting too long in their barn. The people that sold the food were also very rude about the rats. Asking me all kinds of questions like: why woud anyone keep rats unless it's to feed to a snake.
I was very happy to stop feeding the LabDiet.

I'm pretty sure Shelagh feeds a Purina LabDiet (6F) and has good results with it. They have many different Lab Diets....

That's why I make my own mix from bulk people food. I know people food is going to to be good quality, and I can find specs of all the ingredients and amount of proteins/vitamin/etc and make a good mix with some research.
Tho no guarantee about safefy with lettuce and baby carrots & stuff having problems...

Wow. Unbelievable, they should have been happy that you were tolerating them and their crappy food as long as you did!

She feeds them Mazuri 6F. Is Mazuri made by Purina?

Interesting...Mazuri is the brand name of PMI Nutrition International. (mazuri.com/about)
https://www.mazuri.com/Home.asp?Products=2&Opening=1

Someone bought me a 50 lb bag of Labdiet 5001 which is the standard block they have but at Ren's you have more options. I used it for a couple of months until I found the Mazuri 6F.

The only one I would feed of the Labdiet now is the NIH Rat & Mouse/Auto 4F, but it has alfalfa in it. :( The rest have high protein and/or high fat.

Feeding rats, a grain mix from human food, you are not supplying the right amount of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, macro minerals and amino acids that is required for a full healthy diet, unless you do your research and supplement their foods.

What I don't understand is why is there rat food out there is terribly high levels of protein when high protein is not good for rats???

What is the difference between Mazuri and Mazuri 6F?

EarlGrey and I made the trek out to Ren's and loaded up on Mazuri brand Rat and Mouse Diet. Is Mazuri 6F a different brand altogether or something that must be special ordered? The label lists the minimum crude protein for the brand we just bought at 23%, which according to what I just read in all your previous posts, is quite high! It is very important to me that these new ratties get the best possible food I can provide for them as I firmly believe that good nutrition is the foundation for good health.

Should we return the Mazuri we just bought in exchange for Mazuri 6F?

Help!
