I recently went to the vet with one of my ratties. She ended up having a URI and she was put on antibiotics. At that time I expressed concern about her eye. It seemed to have quite a bit of porphyrin discharge, and she seemed to be squinting quite a bit. The vet said that the ab would take care of any infection.

She has been on ab now since Monday. Right now, her eye looks a bit swollen/puffy (not the eye itself but the surrounding lids), she is squinting and there is more porphyrin discharge. In the mornings it seems to be fine, no redness, puffiness or porphyrin and she doesn't squint. In the evenings it is the opposite. (To clarify, the eye does not protrude, it is the lids that are puffy)

When I spoke with the vet about this, he said that it is unlikely that an agent would be causing this and we both came to the conclusion that there might just be something irritating the eye. Problem is, I don't know what. She has not had a bedding change in a number of months, she is on fleece (that is cleaned every other day) and all her hammocks are fleece. I have used no cleaning products on her cage in quite some time now and have always used the same clothes washing detergent (she is almost 2 years old and has never reacted to it). There are no perfumes in my room (where they live) because I can't have them either without reacting, and they have a HEPA filter right beside their cages which is on the majority of the time.

I'm not sure what could be irritating the eye or how I can help her. I want to eliminate the irritant, but I cant unless I find it so I am hoping to get some advice from people who may have had rats with eye irritants. Also if there is an eye drop or something that I can put on the eye when it is irritated to prevent her rubbing it too much.

I wanted to post some pictures, but you try keeping her still! Haha it was next to impossible. I will try again in the morning when she is settling down to sleep.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

You could try polysporin ear/eye drops for a week or so and see if that helps at all.
It's actually fairly common where a rat will get a leaky duck and have porphyrin for quite some time before it clears up if it ever does.
Another thing to keep in mind, when a rat has an URI, their eyes can swell a bit due to the URI. I wish I could remember the exact cause, my vet told me this a while ago.

As Jo said it might not clear up. Spencers' eye is exactly like your boys and it's been like that half a year now. Spencer is 2 years old, and he's happy. It never bothers him. We tried various creams with Simon too, he had ongoing health problems so this could have been phorphyrin mixed with a little blood from small cuts he had, but his face always looked horrific as he never cleaned it properly :(
Hopefully it won't bother your girl.

Its so strange since this just started when she started coming down with signs of a URI and still has not gone away. She never had a lot of porph., that was always her sister. So thats why I started to worry a bit.

I will wait it out and see what happens. Thanks for the info! I may try the drops if it still has not gone away by the time I am done her current abs.

Luckily she doesn't have as much porph. as your rattie Rachael! That looks bad, but if it isn't bothering him, then so be it... same will be for my girlie. If it doesn't bother her (and nothing seems to be wrong) then I'll just leave it and watch to make sure nothing gets worse.

Thanks again!

I'm a bit worried now. She is dne ALL of her antibiotics and her eye is the SAME as it was before. I think that ill be getting some of thse ploysporin eye drops to try hem out. Is there any special technique for putting the in ANDhow much should I be givin?

I dont know if I am just over reacting or if there is something wrong with it. She does squint it alot more then her other one.

Try the eyedrops, do a drop say, twice a day (??)... it may take some fighting but the stuff is pretty mild so it'd be hard to mess up and "hurt" her. If there's some sort of irritant she might just need some help flushing it out.

As for technique... no idea. Treats and an extra set of hands??

When I went to the drug store to get the drops all I could find was eye and ear drops for pink eye and swimmers ear. It contains 10 000 units polymyxin B and 0.025mg gramicidin (plus the other non medicinal ingredients)

Is this the right one? I don't know if it is.... As far as I could tell it still has the right medicinal ingredients, but I thought it best to check with those who have used this before.

Thanks!

Awesome! I will try when she isn't mad at me anymore... I had to wash poop off of her back - she was less then thrilled for the unexpected bath... AND she wouldn't even accept treats from me! *sigh* Just stayed at the back of her cage grooming herself. So I left the treats in her cage and she eventually ate them but... boy... lol

She will forgive me and will be all snuggles soon :p

It looks like I got the right ones :) Thanks

I got her to like me when I got home with a Timmies cup for her. She climbed right in and licked out the cup (not coffee, just tea and not too much)

SO now that she likes me, I guess its time to try and get the drops in her eye.....

Thanks Mamarat!

I tried the eye drops.... I think that I was treated as well hahaha! It was EVERYWHERE by the time I was able to get one into her eye. What an escape artist, not even treats would keep her still!

Now we just wait and see if they help anything. And I have the honor of trying again tonight haha

hahahahahaha

tried that! Funniest thing on the planet... and actually did not work - I ended up doing it myself after both of us were treated ourselves! She is a, I dunno... amazing at missing eye drops! I wish I had her ability to escape meds when I was a kid!

If only the actual bottle was easier to use.

Anyway, I finally found that if I hotdog her into a blanket there is no running away... So I guess that is the method I will use. Of course I follow with tonnes of treats so she doesn't sulk and isn't mad at me
