When I first read Ti-Gris, I too figured she was a boy. That's a male name for us francophones in Ontario too. She would have been called P'tite Grise.
But really, it doesn't matter right... names are pretty unisex now.

Good luck to Bessie and her vet apt.

Hmmm ... maybe I spelled it wrong?
I figured the Ti was short for P'tite ... I'll add an e

Back from the vet ...
Ti Grise's breathing has continued to improve. She is still on meds and has been scheduled for a spay in 2 weeks.
Bessie's lump is an abscess still in the process of forming. Clavamox has been added to her baytril
Gabrielle and Bessie have both healed well from their spays

Ti-gris is a girls name lol

Is it really? I'm sorry then. I had been thinking that the ratty's original owner was odd for calling a girl Gris instead of Grise.

all right, I'm going to set the record straight on that...LOL
now, without any offense to anyone, unless your 1st language is french or you are really REALLY fluent with all the nuances of French Canadian slang, you are just gonna have to take my word for it :)

Ti-Gris, meaning little grey, IS a masculine name...
Tite-Grise (or Petite-Grise) meaning little grey again, would be the feminine version of it...
althought I can't see anyone using it...just wouldn't make much sense for a french person to use it that way...

Grisou could be used for both, although it tends to be a little bit more masculine and Grisette would be for a girl

so I agree with godmother 100% on this...:)

or maybe une puce can chime in and confirm this :stickpoke:

Totally confirmed! I was just reading through the thread and about the give my two cents when I saw your post, Marie! :giggle:

Glad your girls are doing well.....I guess I will add my two cents. I ALWAYS change a foster pets name.....they can easily learn a new name and learn to love it...... no matter how old or how long they have had the name....it only matters what happens when she hears the name....a kind word followed by a loving touch and or a treat will have her responding to a new name in no time at all.....

Sorry, I just had to add something to Ti-Gris' name debate.
Acadian French is my first language, by the way.. haha.

Ti-Gris is in fact the masculine of Tite-Grise.

I don't think her owner thought she was a male or anything like that.
As an Acadian, we LOVE abbreviations... or simply the fastest way to say a word.

I think her name might have been P'tite Grise to start with.. but over time, was pronounced Ti-Gris just out of pure laziness, haha.
After a while, it would have stuck and her name was changed to Ti-Gris because it's what she knew.

Just like most of us, I use shorter versions of my pets' names when I talk to them.
Just how Smokey is often called Smoke.
And how Blacky was more than often called Black.
I also pronounce "Chalie" instead of Charlie.. haha

Also, SQ, was this NewRatMama's foster rat before?
I hope she gets better!

I always keep their name if they know it ... although sometimes I have shortened their names.
If they know their name, they were likely loved .... I have only had a few rescues that knew their names, most haven't
and many didn't even have names :(

Bessie is named after my paternal grandmother, Gabrielle is named after the angel

Thanks for the info. I don't know how their owner spelled her name, just how it was pronounced.
Ti Grise was named by her original owner and the girls were not with Newratmama long enough to learn names.

All 3 lived with Newratmama for awhile, then I started fostering them at the end of the summer when I was house sitting for Godmother. I already had the other 3 girls in their family - mama Narnia, and sisters Triva, & Tell (Stella).
I was hoping to rehome them but that didn't work out and they seem to have moved in.

Oh! So Bessie and Gabrielle were Izzy and the other one that I forgot the name of..

They are three very beautiful girls! I met them and really enjoyed them!
Especially Ti-Gris... I hope she still has a long life to live. <3

Ti-Grise goes in for her spay tomorrow.
Hopefully she will be found healthy (she is still on 2 antibiotics, pred & lasix) this time
and will have an uneventful surgery

Gabrielle & Bessie were spayed on Oct 3 and are doing well
... just wish Gabrielle would stop humping older spayed cagemates

P'tite Grise is home ... a very very cuddly little girl
P'tite Grise was spayed and also had an abdominal hernia removed.
She has a little seepage but is doing well.
She seemed cold when I picked her up at the vets so she is now cuddled up with a snuggle safe and several blankets
