My 4 month old rat Napoleon, who was confirmed twice as a male has had HER first litter of baby rats born yesterday in the evening. This evening upon checking on the babies I discovered one had been rejected and did not make it and of the other six - One had something wrapped around their feet.

I called the local vet to see what to do. The foot is detached from the body and what looks like some sort of string is what is keeping the foot attached to the rest of the leg. The vet told me I could euthanize the baby rat or amputate the foot itself, but keep the string around the foot for blood loss. I amputated the foot and kept the string around it. The baby did not seem to feel any pain as the vet said would happen and Napoleon is keeping close watch on the baby.

I'm still worried, should I be putting Polysporin on it? How do I know when to take the rest of the string off - or will it fall off itself? The veterinary clinic will not be open until Monday and this baby is only 24 hours old. What should I do? Thanks for your time!

OMG, you're so brave! I'm thinking if the baby was ok after that it's meant to be fine and I'd leave it alone as long as it's eating ok and nothing starts to swell or smell or turn an odd color. I send a kiss that baby! and a hug to you!

I'm a little shocked the vet told you to do it yourself. I would remove the string now. These kind of accidents happen and rats love their feet and tails at birth.
Good luck with the little one, but I'm guessing it should be fine now.
