A little less than 2 weeks ago I met this beautiful black berk at a pet store. As much as I try not to buy pet store rats & I really don't need any more, I have been looking for a girl to be Jack's girlfriend. (Jack is neutered but he does not play well with others. He's worst in group intros & not very nice one on one with other boys, but one on one with girls seems to be... tolerable. However, my girls are with their bonded group so taking one out is not an option.)

Anyway, Jill was licky, friendly, & submissive but skinny. She didn't sound or seem ill so I decided she'd be a good gf for Jack, I'd just have to fatten her up!
The night I brought her home:

Grooming okay on her own:

Within 48 hours Jill became lethargic & rarely left her hidey bin in her cage, though she was still eating & drinking. I took her to the vet that night & he couldn't find anything physically wrong with her but we didn't do any extensive tests. She was sneezing a bit so we put her on baytril, just in case it was more than the new home sneezes.
Fast forward 3 days & she was going downhill fast! She failed the cheerio test, had lost more weight, had trouble with her balance, & I noticed a small lump beside her urethra (plus she had a vaginal plug that came off eventually with compresses & soaks in the sink.)

Can't really see it well but there's a small lump to her right (our left) & shows how her vagina was plugged but it was hard to photograph. Basically it's that yellowish/greenish bit under where she pees..

The following day I was planning on bringing her to the vet again but she perked right up. I figured it must be the baytril! It must be fighting whatever infection she has... This continued up until the weekend when she went downhill again. :(

This time it is much worse... She is skin & bones. She hasn't been drinking unless I syringe it into her or put a bowl up to her mouth. I've been feeding her soft foods because when she tries lab blocks she can't use her forepaws to grasp & she was even throwing her limbs out stiffly when she ate. Turns out she does this while grooming as well... I'm adding a video to show you what I mean. Poor thing even shoved her foot in her mouth last night while drinking from a syringe & needed help getting it out.
Pictures from tonight:

Hard to see but it's all distended & there's a good-sized lump under there, no more vaginal plug though but you can see the red/blood just a bit

This all sounds neurological, yes? I was thinking PT. Today she perked up a bit as well, from her condition last night anyway... last night she seemed to be nothing more than reflexes. She was completely unresponsive other than sucking, grabbing & kicking. Today she is definitely still here... She is also bleeding a bit from her urethra & the lump is bigger. She's peeing all over herself so I have to constantly clean her off.

The vet who saw her last wasn't in town today but we spoke & discussed her condition & he said he wants to do more research & then call me tomorrow & then he'll see her. I'm not sure whether we should try something else to save her? or should I just have her pts? :sad3:

In a nutshell:

Hunched posture
can barely use her forepaws
seems to be losing control of her body
porph all around her eyes
peeing on herself
blood trickling out of her urethra
lump beside & under her urethra
loss of balance
lethargic
mostly immobile
severe weight loss
weak
rapid heart rate

I think that's it... I am just looking for advice on what it sounds like to everyone here or to hear what others have done in a similar situation... :?

Here are the videos: (first is just her eating some applesauce off a spoon)

This is the one showing her trying to groom herself after drinking some water. Warning - this video is upsetting!

Normally I do intervene & help her stay upright. Also, she wasn't even doing this on Saturday... it's been progressing on the poor girl that fast! :sad3:

It looks like classic PT to me. They all get a similar look sadly. Now with her if possible I would ask for a dexamethasone injection from the vet, oral pred for afterwards and baytril. Wait and see if she responds, it can be very very fast with the dex injection, slower with the pred.

You will need to pick up Ensure (or something similar) and baby cereal, mix it very watery and syringe it into her mouth. Try to get a minimum of 10 cc's in on each feeding. I feed Inca 3 times, in teh morning before work with a more solid mix, then as soon as I get home, much more liquidy as she's thirsty as well, then her final feeding later in the evening...a bit more solid with the baby cereal again to get her through the night.

Antibiotics - perhaps baytril + clavamox as it sounds like she has an infection, perhaps more then that, and definately needs a good rat vet to examine her.

As for pt .... sub-Q dex injections once a day for 5 days and then pred twice a day ... you will need to check and see if you need to wait a day or two between the two meds.
.... and put her on bromocriptine twice a day, asap. If it works, it treats the tumour, not just the symptoms.
Please see: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=24452&hilit=bromo
and viewtopic.php?f=21&t=28917&hilit=bromo

As noted in Godmother's post, she starts treating with bromo by giving 1/4 of the dose and gradually increasing it.
It is more effective if given with predisone, and predisone must be given with an antibiotic as it lowers the immune system.
And I believe it should be given around the same time as food as it may irritate the stomach.

And try feeding her soy infant formula or if you can't, ensure

Hope Jill is soon feeling better

Extreme pain can also look like PT in a rat. When Luna had her kidney removed I thought she had PT after the op but it was mostly pain and went away with high doses of Metacam.

She does look like she is in pain in some of the pics ...

Also you may want to compress the lump as it may be an abscess

Hope the vet is able to find out what is wrong and give her the appropriate treatment

Thanks for the replies everyone. Jill is pretty bad again today but is eating some & taking her medicine. She was also a good girl for her bath today - she really, really needed one.

About the lump, I am going to soak it in water every day & also do warm compresses a couple times throughout the day as well just in case it is just an abscess.

Regarding the meds - I owe money from our last vet visit where 7 of my rats needed abs & the meds cost more than the visit itself! Anyway, due to that I am limited in what I can do for her today.
The vet said he can't see her & give her the dex injection until I pay it off BUT he did call in the prescription for pred to my pharmacy & so I will pick that up later. I know it won't work as quickly but hopefully it will help quick enough & of course she'll be on baytril for a few more weeks at least.

[s:10866wfh]And for the pain, I can at least give her children's advil right now but I don't think he can call in metacam to the pharmacy, can he? I can always call him back & ask. If he can I could start her on that as well...[/s:10866wfh]

Edit: Was just told I can't give pred & advil at the same time so ignore that last bit. Good to know! This is why I posted here lol

Poor little girl, she looks very dehydrated too, hope you can get her to eat while she's on biotics :(

We haven't started the pred yet but I just wanted to post that tonight Jill is more alert & standing upright again; earlier today she couldn't even do that much.
She ate about 5cc's of apple sauce & I'm going to try & get the same amount or more of soy infant formula mixed with cereal into her in a bit.
She actually tried to grasp the syringe tonight! And was very eager for the applesauce.

Thanks for the positive thoughts & vibes her way!

An update on Jill: She was doing well this morning - she was grooming herself properly, which means she was actually licking her hands & cleaning areas she hasn't in a while! but she still has trouble with balance. My mom surprised me with a new box of baby cereal this morning & Jill LOVED it! She was so enthusiastic my mom took pictures. :)

Tonight she was sleeping & lately when Jill sleeps there is no waking her up, she is still very weak & really needs her rest. I made sure she got most of her meds (though even that was a struggle) but I am not able to feed her when she is like this, so I will check on her in a couple hours & see if she is ready to get up! She also didn't get a bath or soak tonight so I just gave her a sponge bath.

Fingers crossed she is feeling more awake by the morning & that the pred starts to work soon! There was a mix-up trying to get it from the pharmacy so she didn't start it Tuesday night but it's all good now. So, let's see some improvement by early next week!!

Lookit her holding on, such a good girl!

Jill was much more awake & alert today! She ate lots of cereal/soy infant formula mix & took both her meds well! :D
Unfortunately, I made her pablum a lot more watery this evening & so she got it ALL over herself & my hand. LOL So she desperately needed a bath afterwards & I made sure to photograph it all...
