I know this has been covered a lot and I could be over reacting, but I figure its best to get info about this here.

I just got a two new baby boys 5 weeks old and the one little guy sneezes a lot, usually when he is excited and moving around and cleaning, but not when he is sleeping or eating. This is just day two and I'm letting them adjust, but I was just wondering what the opion is on his sneezes? He eats and drinks fine and when I put my ear to his body I don't hear wheezing.

How much is the vet for this sorta thing, I'm currently unemployed right now and in Markham so not sure what I could do if he gets worse, and does it spread??

Sounds like new home sneezies. Dry little sneezes, sometimes one right after the other then stops? Our rats have sensitive respiratory systems and they are just acclimating to all the new smells in your home.

I hope so, yeah he runs around and it's one big sniffle and sneeze attack, he rubs his nose and carries on all excited lol

How long do new rat sneezes go on for?

When we got our first pair of ratters, Sprocket sneezed everytime you touched him. He would sneeze at everything. He had no congestion and was perfectly fine. It took a bit to get it to stop, we found out it that anything dusty sets him off. About a month in, we found perfect bedding for him and he hasn't had a sneezing fit since. He might just be overly sensitive to something in the cage or around the cage.

Well he sneezes in and out of the cage, but only when he's running around or excited, he sleeps fine and is calm. I'm keeping a eye on him, I just worry a lot lol

Sounds like our Ash, he had the sneezes when he came here. He's fine now though. We got him Dec 23rd, and it took a while for them to stop.

Is it weird he sneezes all the time though? Mainly when he's out and about or awake in his cage. Well all the time might be a little much but I'd say a good 75% of the time he does, or he sounds like a squeeze toy. Still don't here wheezing or rattling in the lungs. And the bedding doesn't seem to be the issue as he does it in other rooms where there is none.

Anyone know of a good vet that close to Markham, or even if it is a little further. I'm unemployed so what would this sorta thing cost? He's just a little guy I feel bad for him. :(

It is normal cause when you think about it, rats sniff the air and everything else all the time so whatever is in the air is making him sneeze so any debris or even smells can make hims sneeze. Until he no longer needs to sniff everything because he's become comfortable with his surroundings, he'll keep sniffing incessantly thus making him sneeze.

Go to Dr Selinger at Bridle Trail in Unionville. She only works certain days though.

Your exam will cost about $45 I think, and then meds on top of that if he needs it. But she wont medicate if she doesn't feel it's necessary.

Thanks, I still don't know what to do. He seems to bounce around and play and everything but still sneezes all the time. His name is Sneezers now, so I'll wait till the end of this week and and if he still wont stop I'll go see the doc.

Thanks :D

1. What type of bedding are you using in the cage? Make sure you have proper bedding, and not using any wood shavings or anything that will produce fine dust.

2. What type of cage are they in. Make sure it's large enough for them, and has proper ventilation.

3. What are you feeding them?

4. Vet care is not cheap. Rats are very susceptible to illness. Not because they are dirty or diseased. But because of poor and improper breeding practices that are in place to minimize cost and maximize profit....so babies are being produced from bad gene pools and this has caused the population to be prone to respiratory illness, tumours, etc.

For what it's worth, there's a good vet in Pickering, so only about 20 minutes from you. Dr. J. Sawyer of Millenium City Veterinary Clinic on Liverpool Road. She and her staff have experience with rats.
Hopefully the sniffles and sneezes will subside once the little guy gets adjusted to his new home.

Hi, well the bedding is carefresh which has worked for all of my guys and is very light on the dust, I don't do wood shavings that stuff isn't to hot, unless it's Aspen shavings which are good.

They get good vitamin blocks with some whole sunflower seeds, pumkin but very little, the rest is lettuce, carrotts, banana and for a treat a little cheese.

The cage is HUGE its a ferret cage two levels plenty of room.

He seems to sneeze regardless if he's in the cage or out. I keep my rats out for about a hour or two each day for exercise and exploring, the babies wont leave the sofa which is good, but there is no bedding there so doubt thats the problem.

I'll look into the vet, I don't mind paying the vet bills for the little guys it would just be better if I was working which currently I'm not so money is a factor. :)

Right sorry couldn't recall the name of the cage. They have been in the R-695 with my boys now for 3 days.

They all get along and my boys will even fall over and let themselves get played with and groomed, everyone's happy.

Now if sneezes would stop being so sneezy it would be good. Also he is smaller then his brother, his brother is way more social and eats more, sneezers seems to be only slightly bigger then when I got him. Well compared to his brother he's the smallest noticeably. But he eats so??

He sneezes when there is no carefresh when he's out far away from it for over two hours, while he's out.

Plus the carefresh is on the bottom of the first floor of the cage he's is at the top where there is none.
