Petunia has had a stroke & of course, the vet clinic on call in Fredericton does not take rats. I don't want to see her suffer until Monday. Please, we need some contact phone numbers to end her suffering. I am willing to travel.

Help us help Petunia!

Can you describe her condition?
Is she having difficulty breathing? Eating?
Can you pm me your phone number as I am in the area and may be able to help.

A stroke is not necessarily a death sentence. Sometimes they can improve from where they are right after.
can you describe what's going on with her? Is she suffering or just confused?

Stroke or PT? If this is a stroke, there are meds she can be given to bring her back. Keep her warm and hydrated and get in contact with SQ, thats your best bet right there. Good Luck! Keep us posted! Sending hugs and prayers from us to yous!

She was acting fine up until I went to work today at noon. She was bright eyed, eating, drinking, and running around. No sign of pt. When I got home she was laying on her right side unable to move. She started to chatter and boogle when I picked her up and pet her but her body is limp. The vet at the City Animal Hospital refused to see her because she does not handle rats. :wallbang: I called the vet in Woodstock but they told me to give her Quick Start for cars to kill her. :redhot: Petunia deserves so much better.

WHAT?
I COULD ANYONE EVEN SAY THAT LET ALONE A VET OMG!!!!!!!!!!

A vet is sworn to do no harm, that alone would be grounds for dismissal. Time to start writing letters!

After 8+ hours of suffering, Petunia has finally left us for her journey to the rainbow bridge. She started breathing heavy around 2am & had a couple of seizures. She did not go without pain but she did go knowing she was loved as she was in my arms. I will never forgive the attitude and lack of action from the vet at the City Animal Hospital in Fredericton or the lady on the phone from the Woodstock Veterinary Clinic who told me to poison my beloved rat. It infuriates me that people can be so ignorant. I am lost for words.

Thank you for your help and kind words.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
Is there an vet association you can contact about what you were told on how to handle your rat's emergency?

Seriously, who can we write? Let's flood the BBB or Exotic vets assoc. or SOMETHING with letters of complaint and get this place closed! How horrid!

Also, sorry for the loss of your girl. We lost our Quilt to a stroke two weeks ago, it sucks how sudden it is. :sad3:

I am so very sorry about your loss of Petunia, but it does sound like a stroke and she likely wasn't aware of her last hours much at all, so there wouldn't be much discomfort.

I do advise continuing to look for another vet just in case something else happens to one of your other rats. You don't want to be in this situation again :(

I don´t know what quick start is, but from the sound of it, I don´t even want to know :sad3:
I´m so sorry :sad3:

I am shocked at the callousness of the person in Woodstock. Really, that is grounds for a complaint to the Vet College.

As for the City Hospital, they are also a big problem. They are the ones who left me in the lurch the night my Bill had heart failure. The guy on call that night would not consider treating him, and he offered me euthanasia if I was not in the room (and it would have been done by means of injection to the heart). Not acceptable. It was better for Bill to die at home than to go through that.

We are lucky enough to have a couple of excellent rat vets in this city, and some who are really good, and some who are willing to help in an emergency. And then we have the others. When there is an emergency, we are completely dependent on luck.

I don't think that an ER service should be able to refuse an animal, unless it would pose a real danger to themselves and the public (e.g. a rabid animal).

I am so very sorry that on top of dealing with an illness you had to deal with callous vets. :sad3: I'd be beyond devastated.

Godmother, while I see your side of it, I can also kinda see why vets would refuse certain species. If they don't feel qualified to treat them, they risk knowing they injured an animal with their "treatment", and lawsuits. From what I've seen around where I live though, most emergency hospitals accept all legal to own pets, even if they aren't specialists.

Thank you for all the kind words from everyone.

I will be contacting my regular vet to inform them of what has happened as they pay for the after hours service provided by the other local vet clinics. I am also planning on contacting City Animal Hospital to get a written copy of their policies and then I will be filing a complaint with the NBVMA http://www.nbvma-amvnb.ca/complaint.htm

I do not expect all vets to experts with exotics but by denying my request to humanely euthanize Petunia, the vet at City Animal Hospital has violated their Canadian Veterinary Oath.

"As a member of the veterinary medical profession, I solemnly swear that I will use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society.
I will strive to promote animal health and welfare, relieve animal suffering, protect the health of the public and environment, and advance comparative medical knowledge.
I will practise my profession conscientiously, with dignity, and in keeping with the principles of veterinary medical ethics.
I will strive continuously to improve my professional knowledge and competence and to maintain the highest professional and ethical standards for myself and the profession."

Please PM me if you would like to help give a voice to the voiceless in Fredericton.
