I'll start by saying I have no pictures, but we do have a vet appointment for Monday morning. If anyone here, after reading this, thinks this needs attention sooner than Monday, then I'll just do a walk in emergency appt. tomorrow.

Holding Bear last night, I thought he had poop stuck in the fur in his bum area, but a closer look/feel reveals that the area where his left testicle used to be is grey and hard/lumpy. He wasn't receptive to being probed, but it almost feels like there's a hole where something ruptured. A wee amount of clear fluid was on my finger after I touched the area.

There is a slight odor, but only noticeable if you practically stick his bum up your nose (sorry if any of you just vizualized that...)

Bear is active, eating, drinking, pooping, sleeping, making trouble, etc. as usual. He is not messing with the area, no pain squeaks, nothing.

Bear was neutered in March 2011, per his SPCA vet records. It says he made a full and complete recovery with no complications. And abscess at that site surely would have ruptured long before now, yes? Could this have been a tumor that ruptured? I found blood in the cage a few days ago, and assumed Obie had picked the scab off his bumble again. Now I'm wondering if it was from Bear.

How quickly would tissue become necrotic after a rupture of that sort? How quickly can it spread (IF it spreads)?

PS - to further define the extent of this necrotic looking tissue, it almost feels like he has a lumpy, mishapen testicle. I'm not talking about a little bit of blackening skin on the edges of a wound site.

I feel like a jerk, I can't believe I hadn't noticed anything earlier. :wallbang:

I have had boys neutered in march that are still getting abscess granted my neuters were botched all to hell. I would get him looked at just because antibiotics help with the abscess problem and this long after there could be a stitch or something that is causing a problem

He'll definitely be looked at Monday. I hate to do a walk in tomorrow because a) my vet isn't working tomorrow, b) Satuday walk ins are very rushed and they barely look at the animal, I'd rather have a schedule time when my vet can really examine the boy.

I have some abs at home, if anyone thinks it will help at this point. I didn't think there was much you could do for tissue once it went necrotic, except remove it.

It sounds like a ruptured abscess which is quite common and usually heals on it's own. Having antibiotics absolutely helps. I don't think it's a rush for the vet.
The blood, I would think is from the bumble and not that wound. Abscesses rarely bleed, they are encapsulated infections.

Ok, I didn't realize that.

I made an edit to my original post - the necrotic tissue isn't just a small amount, it's like he had a grey, dead teste. I assumed it would need removal, but certainly if antibiotics are an option, that would be preferable.

The fact that a teste remained is a concern. Do let us know what the vet suggests.

Sorry, I should be more clear. He was definitely neutered, that's just my description of how the area feels to me. THere's definitely no dead teste, just enough tough, nasty skin that it feels as though there it.

Holding my appt. for Monday morning with Dr. P, in the meantime Bear is just as pop-corn-y and happy as always.

Heh, ya I remember that whole thing. Gosh, I hope that isn't what's happened with Bear...I remember at the SPCA there was a big debate over whether he'd been neutered, one set of papers said yes, the computer files said no. So we went and looked at his parts. He was definitely neutered, but it looked like a right sloppy job. In hindsight, maybe the bumpiness in that area was an abscess. It didn't feel like it, but maybe it was.

I can say a half of a testicle feels just like an abscess :)

Dr. P seems to think we're looking at a fistula. I know very little about these, and will be reading up on them today.

My mom is at the vet with him, so I'm not able to give many details or explain at the moment. Dr. P's surgery day isn't until Friday, but Dr. F could possible operate today. I'm waiting to hear back from Mom what we're doing. I'm leaving everything up to Dr. P, since I trust him completely with the medical care of my rats. If he thinks it can wait til Friday, than wait we shall.

Good news, per Dr. P, is Bear is still passing his poops out his rectum, I guess as opposed to them going the fistula route (and again, I've done about 2 seconds of research on fistulas so far.) If we wait til Friday, he'll be on ABs till then.

Dr. P felt it better to let Dr. F go ahead and do surgery today. I'm not a fan of Dr. F, but that's mainly on account of his demeanor while communicating with pet owners. I know he is a capable surgeon, and if Dr. P recommends letting Dr. F do it, then so be it.

Ohh poor little ****er!! Good luck to him today!

Vet called, my boy is out of surgery and ready to go home. The vet will talk with me in further detail about exactly what they did, what they found, etc. when I get there. I kinda wish they had taken pictures, but I doubt they did. Anyway. Can't wait to get my little Bear home
