Hello Everyone,

I have owned two beautiful boy fancy ratties for about 4 months, so they were/are about 6 months max.
They were both un neauterd and I must admit we had a bit of a territorial problem, my white one was very dominant. They came not from the same litter but the same cage in the pet store, and although he was MUCH smaller when we got him he grew massive and was deff the leader. He made a large cut in my hooded ones side and this is when we started to worry.

We leave them to free roam the room, making sure its ok for Ratties, but this does stop them from fighting as its a large space and they can have differant areas to keep them busy.

Last night I just put them back in the cage and within 10min they were fighting, I went over as I heard the scuffle and the white one was having a fit on the floor, he was spinning around on his side and squeeking. I imideatly opened the cage and the other rat FLEW out like never before and ran ran ran away he was so scared.

I didn't know what to do and slightly panicked and froze in the moment. I tried to hold him still in his place and he stopped and then he took his last breath AND DIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tried to revive him but he was already gone, just like that all within a few seconds!!!!

He was chewing on a little bag of natural lavender earlier on, could this have poisioned him????? I give them lots of fresh fruits too, recently I have given then melon, mango, apricot, tomatoe????? Could I have poisioned him without knowing???

They have a bedding which is suitable for ratties and I try to keep the cage as clean as possible.

Does anyone know what this could have been from??? Im scared it will happen to the other now, I am so upset I hope it wasn't my fault!!!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh! I am so so sorry. I don't think this was due to the bedding, foods, or fighting and I don't think you had much to do with it. I think it was most likely a stroke/heart attack issue sort of thing. I can't say much about this stuff, I'm sorry, but hold on- I'm sure the other members will help you out instantly.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
But, I too don't think it was anything to do with food, bedding or fighting. It sounds like it was something neurological, these things just happen sometime.

Defiently sounds like a heartattack or sezuire, from what I've read here from other members who lost ratties from that :( males are prone to heartfailure and strokes I hear more then females, just so sad he left so young :( I'm so sorry for your loss, but it wasn't your fault, there was nothing you could have done. At this point, try to relax and comfort the other little guy and plan your next step, that's teh best thing I can say about that. I'm so sorry for you! :hugs:

I am so sorry you lost your young rattie so suddenly. I Googled lavender and it says that lavender oil may be toxic, but not necessarily the flowers. So I think it was probably a stroke or heart problem, as a lack of oxygen to the brain can cause seizures in animals. It's tough to watch them pass, unable to do anything for them.
His brother probably sensed something was wrong, and that's why he took off. He will need lots of loving the next little while, and then a new buddy to keep him company. Take comfort in him, as he will take comfort in you... :hugs:

Poor boy. It sounds like a stroke to me. :cuddle:
It is VERY scary when something like this happens but it's NOT you fault. :hugs:
Make sure the remaining boy gets a tonne of TLC and a new friend to keep him company.
