And i'm afraid it's some kind of early onset respiratory disease.

sometimes, not all the time, when he's on my shoulder right beside my ear, i can kind of hear him do a sort of VJJ VJJ noise when he breathes. and even that is sporadic. he will do it a few times, then stop, then start again.

it's very quiet, because he literally needs to be right beside my ear for me to hear it.

what could it be? could it be he just does it because he's excited? or should i go to a vet that i unfortunately cannot afford :(

buh.

I'm not an expert and I'm sure others here will give you better information but as far as I know, rats should not make noises and it could be the beginnings of RI. Usually a visit to the vet and putting your little buddy on abs is the first thing to do...
I have a little girl who was about 5 weeks old when I got her and she was making noises, eventually I put her on Baytril and she has cleared right up.

Rats shouldn't make noise but I know that some rats to a very low growly kind of noise. You can only hear it if you are very close to the rat. Back in the day, on the Quebec forum, where I learned most of everything I know about behaviour, they used to say that rats make a "macho" grunt. I've noticed my bullies doing this so it made sense to me.
