I'm so sorry. Unfortunately, once they get to that open mouth breathing there's usually the point of no return. This happened to our Gus and we had to make the same decision. Our boy Tobi had cancer that spread to his lungs too just like your guy...all the abs in the world weren't helping him, then x-rays were taken :-\.
It's really hard, especially if you've just lost another rat recently, but c'est la vie. They definitely seemed to have a good life with you and you were a great owner, and that's all there is to it. It would have happened in any home he was at, and I'm sure it was better that he was with you rather than a snotty 5 year old who's parents would just have put him outside or let him suffer it out.
