My old man is lonely :(

I think we are going to take a look this weekend :) I was thinking of getting a yearish old girl for him. Would it be better with older/younger? I am really only wanting to get one since I already have 14 and his cage can only support 2 ratters. After mortimers 2 surgeries I can't afford another cage either.

Unless the female is currently alone then I would push for getting 2 so that the females will have a friend to help them adjust. And getting 2 will make QT a lot easier since they will be able to go through it with a friend.

My Kenny was an only ratty when he was rescued.
He was miserable with the boys and they fought a lot.
We had him neutered but nothing changed.
Slowly I began intro's with my girlies and Now he has 5 girls to cuddle, groom and play with.
A lot of patience but it was well worth it.

That picture is lovely! Well. I think the stars have fallen in place because all of this seems to be working out. I found someone who is selling 15ish different cages for no more than $40 a pop (I need a bigger cage for them) So then I can get 2 girls. And apparently from that hoarding case last year, this store still has girls left from that who should have just been spayed. So...this really is working out. So lets hope this is all going to be going smooth until Friday, that's when I'll be going to see what can be done. I really hope that Roosevelt takes to the girls and he can become happy again. :) The girls should be approx. 1-1.5yr.

I'm excited!

So, I called the store to make sure they had spayed females and gave her a little run down. She wants me to bring the old man to 'make sure they get along'

...um...

I was planning to do intros a bit slow and I think a 35 min. car-ride for the old man would be stressful on him! I just kind of went 'uh...okay'. and got off the phone.

A little odd?

I talked to the pet store who sells them for the rescue. There is no way I'm bringing them and I don't think they should deny me for that. They just got another huge batch of babies. I just want two beautiful spayed females. Shouldn't be too difficult :(

Have you filled out an adoption application/ talked to the rescue? Since they are coming from a store where they are in contact with new rats on the time I would highly suggest a proper QT.

I think as long as he's happy and as long as you're giving him enough attention he should be fine on his own. If I were you I wouldn't put him through the stress of introduction at his age. However, if you really think that he needs a companion, I would agree with everybody else and tell you to buy a neutered female. :)

I'm not sure how it works. I'm just going to go there and scope it out and hope for the best. I have a vet card with me too so I can at least show them that information if they are that concerned.

He definetly needs someone. Last night he slept on my lap for 4 hours and wouldn't leave no matter how much I moved.
