Yesterday I let the boys out for playtime and noticed Max wasn't using his front right foot/leg at all. He was getting around just fine on 3 legs and going about his business as he usually does, just holding that front foot to his body the whole time. To me it doesn't appear to be swollen, but I'm not sure I'd be able to tell even if it was. I felt the leg and surrounding area very gently, and he didn't seem to be in any pain. He's still not comfortable enough being handled for me to get a close look at the foot, and I didn't want to risk possible further injury by trying to restrain him. I did notice him using the foot (hand?) to stabilize a grape while he ate it though.

Max is the same rat mentioned here viewtopic.php?f=21&t=21349. He's moved into the cage with the other boys permanently and seems much happier for it. He is almost always squished up in the nesting box with one or both of his brothers. His stress level is way down, and there has been no more stinky runny poo, thank goodness :)

I feel like this is a sprain or something that can heal on its own. Would I be right in giving him a few days (or longer) before taking him to the vet? I can't even think of what a vet might do in the case of a broken toe or something, their feet are so tiny. I said I didn't see swelling, but should I still give him something for that anyway?

It's probably just a sprain and should heal in no time. You could always give him metacam (if you happen to have it on hand) or infants advil to help with the pain and the swelling (if any).

I agree with smilez_n_hugs.
Sometimes with sprains it's not serious enough to need metacam. Do keep an eye on it for any signs of severe swelling and discoloration.
