Ok, I have a breeder friend that attempted to breed a pair of her rats - yeah, I know..

The male & female have lived side by side in separate cages for some time. When they were put together on "neutral" ground, male acted a little aggressive towards her & she got bit a couple of times. He bent down a couple of times to do his "male cleaning thing" - like after mating, but she watched the entire 10 mins or so while they were out together & never saw actual mating. She returned both to their cages because she was not expecting the aggression.
She is a responsible breeder , and I am asking for her -- why would this aggessive type behavior happen & is it possible she might have got pregnant in a blink of an eye?
The female seemed very excited jumping around the male and such. thanks for any advise.

She can't be a responsible breeder if she doesn't know anything about rats mating. She should have, at the very least, done a lot of research, and have a mentor and a whole host of other requirements to be a truly responsible and ethical breeder.
The best you can do for her and esp for the rats is to try to convince her to NOT breed rats.

I know..but just tryin to help figure out the situation for now is all.
By responsible - I mean she does not breed all the time, as a matter of fact this is the 3rd time and she places all babies in good homes after she grills the future "parents".
She has never had this happen before.

Sorry, but that is not the defination of a responsible breeder ....
She sounds like a horrible backyard breeder, risking the lives of her rattie girls
and producing rats not bred for health or for life span, that take away potential homes from needy rescue rats.
Hope you can educate her and get her interested in rescuing instead of breeding.

Does she have a scale? I would think someone who was breeding rats would be able to use google (hopefully before they decide to breed at least...), and would know the best ways of determining pregnancy, and what behaviors are normal. I don't know the answer to your specific question, but she should probably get in touch with an experienced breeder and ask these questions, or try typing them into a search engine...you would be surprised by the amount of info out there

it just happened - so obviously the female would NOT have gained weight in the last few hours.
She has a scale. Not a backyard breeder,. Just never mind. Sorry I asked for her.

Actually, I've read a bunch of stuff that says females can gain a significant amount of weight within 24 hours of becoming pregnant.

Again - you should tell her to try reading some articles and searching on google. Also I forgot to add that there is also usually (not always) the presence of a mucous plug in the vaginal area of the female rat up to 24 hours after breeding. It really doesn't sound like your friend is a responsible breeder if she doesn't know these things...she probably shouldn't be breeding rats. :(

Yes, she is a backyard breeder. Any breeder who breeds with the sole intent of producing babies is a backyard breeder.
An ethical breeder tries to better the rat. They choose top quality, healthy and good temperament rats to breed. These rats are from other long standing breeders who have worked long and hard to make the rat a healthier animal.

I would urge you to please help your friend realize how wrong it is to keep producing more rats when there are already so many rats out there, needing homes. Urge your friend to rescue rats, not produce them.

OMG she knows abt the plug, she is not a backyard breeder, once again. I will not continue this conversation anymore.
Stop judging people you do not know, it is wrong. She does not breed just to breed.
May God help you to stop being so judgemental. This is another one of those forums that has tunnel vision & feels everyone else is wrong.

I will no longer come here.

If she isn't breeding for healthier rats and if she isn't breeding for health reasons she is the definition of a backyard breeder, no matter how hard you fight.

[schild=32,1,4B0082,C0C0C0:12vt6hj3]YO MOMMA[/schild:12vt6hj3] is a backyard breeder...

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO DO SO..... THIS FORUM HAS INSULTED & INSULTS PEOPLE THEY DO NOT EVEN KNOW... JUDGING THEIR INTENTIONS AS BEING WRONG & CALLING THEM NAMES " BACKYARD BREEDERS", TROLLS. YOU ARE NO ONE TO JUDGE OTHER PEOPLE YOU DO NOT KNOW. YOU DO NOT KNOW THEIR INTENTIONS. ALERT -- THERE IS NOTHING WRONG FOR WANTING TO BREED YOUR OWN RATS TO KEEP AS PETS. IT IS A CHOICE, NOT A CRIME. IT IS A BETTER ALTERNATIVE FOR SOME PEOPLE. SOME OF THESE RATS HAVE ENTERED IN SHOWS AND ARE USED TO EDUCATE OTHERS ABOUT THEM BEING GOOD PETS & HUSBANDRY IS A BIG DISCUSSION.
UNFORTUNATELY THERE WILL ALWAYS BE TOO MANY ANIMALS OF ALL TYPES W/O HOMES , ABUSED OR UNWNATED.
BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT ONE THAT WANTS TO BREED THEIR OWN ARE WRONG. THESE RATS ALL GET GOOD HOMES AND ARE WELL LOVED & CARED FOR. IT IS A VERY CONTROLLED BREEDING. I NEED NOT EXPLAIN ANY MORE. I AM NOT YELLING W/ ALL CAPS, JUST WANT ALL TO READ THIS. WE ARE HONEST. MANY PEOPLE IN FORUMS LIE ABOUT THE RAT THEY JUST BOUGHT "WAS PREGNANT" ( OOOPSIES )...IN REALITY THEY HAVE BRED THEM, JUST DON'T WANNA READ THE WRATH ON FORUMS ABOUT IT.
I WISH ALL A LONG HAPPY LIFE w/ THEIR RATS...THEIR LIVES ARE SHORT - LET'S ALL ENJOY & SPOIL THEM WHILE WE HAVE THEM.

GOD BLESS.

We are not new to the rescue area so we are fully aware of people lying about their rats being pregnant. We do not promote or encourage breeders just because there are to many rats that need a home and anyone should be able to see this. By all means feel free to find a breeder forum to get support from because we will not support or encourage your friend to breed anything. We are here to help with the rats health and behavior issues. To encourage responsible pet ownership we are here to save rats and take them in from harms way. You feeling as if you need to explain yourself to a rescue forum is just speaking on deaf ears. We wont change our minds.
Good luck in your journey but dont try to explain how they get good homes to us because we see daily how many rats do not. Open your eyes to the bigger picture.

We certainly aren't oblivious to the fact that many lie here about their pregnant rats from the pet store. But since they don't discuss it, we won't bring it up either. But you did bring it up and we will discourage it and try to persuade you/friend to not create more rats. Rescuing is so rewarding, if only you all could give it a chance.
Of course we love all rats and want all to have a great life. We'll always help and such...but when someone comes here, asking questions that they should already know the answer to prior to playing god and adding to the mass overpopulation of rats, then ya, we'll definitely discuss what a terrible idea it is to be a backyard breeder or supporting one.
