Oh my... Love the white and blue. Pretty little things.

hard to believe that My blue beauty mallymkun has been biting me for over a year now isnt it? :laugh4:

She is a special rat, but she loves these two girls, which is different, she is the sole fight starter when it was just her and the 4 girls. She is also the one I worried about most when Introducing these girls to the group, she never did fight with them, she did jump to their aid though :)

I went ahead and stopped the new meds that we started on monday, i was torn on what to do, but terrified that if the swelling got any worse and she cannot breath due to that, I cannot stop that. I will check her in the morning, right now her breathing is still great. I am hoping for a major decrease in her swelling, and i can start the oral med again. I may end up just using albuterol (haha spell check wants to change this to butterball) on her as a maintenance thing.

I will touch base with Dr. Kryder tomorrow as he wasnt in, and his other vets didnt want to advice me on it, since our file is getting kinda large there HA!

I have to take templeton in 10 days after his surgery for stitches to be removed. If the girls are doing well enough for a trip, i will have xrays done to see how the lungs look now. Yes I am still praying for my miracles.

Took lucy off the nebulizer treatments, it has been over 24 hours since she had one. Breathing is still great, facial swelling appears to be going down.

Ludo is still doing great, he is getting all treatments still.

Eleanor still has a bit of harder breathing, but it is improving over time. Nothing like it was. It is not getting any worse which is a good thing.

I will check them tonight, make sure that they are still doing ok, since by then I should have a full answer about how her not being on the treatments are affecting her. Hopefully I can see a bigger difference in her face too, It is hard to judge swelling on a pew, pictures dont work LOL

She is still a bit drained. Unsure how long it will take for them to recover from this all, if anyone has an idea please let me know.

Both my girls are breathing normally again! I am so excited. I still want to have an xray done on her to see how her lungs look though. Neither are back to where they were at, they still tire easily. I am hoping I will see that start to improve this week.

Tonight they both got excited and greeted me at the door. That hasnt happened since I move them to the rabbit cage. I can almost breath again LOL I am stunned I didnt loose one of them, let alone both. here is to hoping they keep improving.

All swelling is gone from lucy's face. I guess she is allergic to that nebulizer med.

Any idea how long it takes to recover from this ordeal? I know it was hard on them.

Each rat recovers at their own pace. The main thing is that they are all feeling better finally. Greeting you at the door is a big indicator of that. :)

I am not sure how I did not lose them, I am almost as shocked with this as I was with Templeton's testicle :laugh4: I wont question it though.

Lucy I thought I would lose first. Then Ludo, he was fine after one nebulizer treatment but I kept him on it with Eleanor. Lucy's face swelled up to at least twice her normal size, allergy to meds. Eleanor became the biggest problem. She had two fights with gasping over this ordeal. Two nights i sat here in horror waiting to see if it would pass or I would have to take her in to have her PTS. I started telling my daughter how we might have to consider helping Eleanor end this battle. Lucy Lost so much weight but she is right back to her thick self now.

I put the girls back with the group tonight. Of course it was a bit of protesting from Isis Queen of denial. Bindi wasn't to happy either. .

They are finally eating lab blocks again. They pretty much lived off of ensure, chips, ham and whatever else they would scarf down.

Friday I takes these girls in, Ludo and Templeton for a recheck :)

They are all clear........Still keeping them on meds for a few more weeks. He was stunned that they were breathing as well as they were. He asked me which one had the worse lungs, he couldn't even see her heart they were so bad. He picked her up listened and he couldn't believe the air was flowing so freely........I explained that I do put animals to sleep when needed but I just didn't get that feeling from her it was time yet, she seemed more like she was fighting to live, not dying.

He even high five me and told me good call on fighting for her and not letting her go. I wont say they are 100% yet, but we are on our way, hopefully I can keep them on the right track.

They have been on meds for almost a month now. Lucy on Baytril since 8/23 and the doxy baytril since the August 30th. Give or take a few days.

Does pneumonia require more medicine time to make sure it does not come back? Should I go by the day we first started or when we did added the doxy? Do i do a month or 6 weeks?

I cant get over not losing them LOL I want to make sure I do this right after them pulling through that horrible ordeal. I look at them running on the table, and lucy pinning the boys down and I am so happy with them making it.

My vet suggests a minimum of 6 weeks worth of meds for pneumonia. If they have improved at that point, then you can probably stop giving them.

Not sure if this is possible for you, but I recommend having extra meds on hand in case they relapse.

My vet is amazing. I get bottles of meds each time i go there. He gave me plenty of that nebulizer meds it has a long life :)

We never had pneumonia here, so i am not sure what is the right thing. I guess two more weeks of meds wont hurt them anyway.

You cannot tell they were ever sick already, I just dont want to be fooled by appearance and stop it to soon.

With rats I would ALWAYS go longer than you think. You want to kill all the bugs, not just the weaker ones. If the most resistant bugs are left and they come back, the meds won't work the second time.
