I was not sure where to post.

So, my boys usually pick a corner to poop in but not peeing. I tryed to train them when they were little but it didnt work so I just left it, I wasn't sure what else to do. I know you cant completly train them of course, but you can for the most part show them where to go. So my question is, if yours are kinf of litter trained, how did you teach them, was there a method you used and how long did it take? Also I see quite a few people use blankets and cloths in the bottom of your cages, poop is easy to clean but do they tend to pee too much on the cloths? how often do you have to clean it? I just figure if they are trained, it would be nice to use cloths because of their lungs. I use boxo which is the exact same as carefresh but its a bit less dusty then carefresh.

Put your litter pan in the place the boys seem to poop the most. Place some poop in the pan and see if they get the hint. Most do but some don't....only time will tell.
Good luck.

My boys pretty much trained themselves using the described method. They even adopted other baskets and such as extra litter trays! But it'll never stop them peeing everywhere unfortunately, seems to be the way with lads :p

It's the same way with ladies too. My girls are, for the most part, litter trained. They still pee on everything, including each other, a great amount. I think I understand the basic reason that they do this, but do they really have to empty a FULL bladder onto another girl!?! :giggle: Lena seems to get it the most. I will pick her up, and her entire back will be wet.

- Put diifferent litter in the litter pan from what their bedding material is
- Place the litter pan where they usually poop
- Any poops outside the litter pan, place inside
- when cleaning the litter pan, always save a few poops and place back in the litter pan
- if you have bedding material other than blakets, placed soild (pee covered) bedding in the litter pan as well

my two girls (kira & molly) are litter trained. I have 2 cages, one on top of the other and both cages are left open at all times. They poop all the time in the litter, but always pee everywhere else. I just excepted it. I only use blankets in the cages. I also throw in smaller blankets loose in the cages for them to snuggle in. If I do laundry and there are any odd socks, I keep them to throw in as well. Usually change the cage every 2nd or 3rd day. I have tons of blankets and towels for them. I went to the thrift store and bought lots of baby blankets. Also went to the dollar store and bought dogs blankets that I use for them as well. I cut some of the blankets into large squares and cut 4 small holes on each end. I use shower curtain hooks, (the plastic ones) and make hammocks for them. They love them!

My girls pretty much pee and poop all in one corner (they pee in other places occasionally). They just did it on their own, it's the opposite corner of their house. I don't bother with a litter box because I clean the cage almost every night! That is for my own sake really, because I have a studio apartment and the smell is very noticeable if I go any longer! I definitely think it depends on the rat. My boys were litter trained for a few months and then just stopped doing it, I have a suspicion it was out of jealousy because I adopted a rabbit at that time!
