Lily is the last of my original 6. She will be 3 in June and is doing ok. She started having HED a while back, and it's getting worse all the time. She started having a skin condition a while ago, she was itchy, scratching and started to get bald patches with scratch marks. Worst of it was because of her HED her coordination was bad to scratch, making her scratches even worse on her body. First thing I thought of was mites. I've had it where only one rat shows signs everytime we've had them. So I dosed everyone with revolution and it didn't help. So then I tried baytril to see if that would help. She was on it for over 3 weeks and that didn't help. I went into the vet last week to get Erin's teeth trimmed and brought Lily with me. We discussed it and my vet suggested psychosis, all neurological, a possible tumor pressing on the receptors or whatever making her THINK she was itchy but not. As soon as she said that, something in my head clicked, like a long awaited answer. So we tried her on pred. I had noticed her get more and more clumsy, but I wasn't sure if it was due to her HED. But I suspect it's more due to a tumor now. So I put her on pred, after 5 days of it her scratches are starting to clear up, she doesn't appear to be as itchy nor scratch as much. I told the vet I will be keeping her on pred. Of course I added baytril combo to this as well.

I'm glad Lily is doing better.
But the pred helps alleviate itchiness so still, it might not be neurological. People with severe allergies are put on pred.
She's such an old girl, lived a good long life, it could very well be PT. This would be the first time though attributed to a lesion that looks like pyoderma.
Something to keep in mind when someone needs help with a stubborn skin issue.

Yes Mamarat, she is the one from Sudbury. My first and last store bought rat.

Jo I wasn't aware of that. Hrm. I guess at this point as long as she's happy I'm happy.

Unfortunately, it seems as if her tumor is PT and is growing. Her itching has stopped but she's way more uncoordinated and not doing well. We are going back and forth on when the time is and if it's coming soon. I will see how she is tomorrow and make a decision then. So I'm not sure if her itching was allergies or not.

It's funny with PT how one day you think the next is the day to help them cross and then they surprise you and turn around. What I find really sad is that I've had 5 out of 6 rats with a neuro issue. I wish I could afford the money to have all my girls spayed and I would do it in a heartbeat.

My vet told me PT is a disease of old age.(as well as kidney and liver) She's having a really long life with you and rats do have good days and bad days. :hugs:

That is so true :hugs:

Today we are taking Lily to the vets to be PTS. She didn't take her meds last night, wouldn't eat and turned in circles. I was back and forth yesterday and last night she gave me the sign. She's ready to go, my last gift is to help her pass, which is something I knew I would have to do.

She almost lived until three. She had a wonderful life. It's the end of something for Wayne and I, she was one of our group of our first 6 rats. She is the last. I will miss her so much. :sad3:
