I took one look at her last night and knew she was about to pop, she looked like a small watermelon had dropped in her!

And I heard those itty bitty squeaks first thing this morning

I didn't remove her to check them out yet, when she wants to I'll let her go play in her other cage with some egg or something and get the final count, but so far it looks like... 15 :panic: So who knows, there might be more hiding where I couldn't see in the nest. And I'll snap some pictures of the little ones for you all. MAN they are tiny, I guess with so many in there they had to be.

Since you offered to take the wild baby,
I wonder if Lilith would adopt the wild baby when hers are a bit older?
(As I am sure you are aware, there are things to do to make sure the orphane smells like her babies, etc.)
That way, the wild baby could bond with her and with new siblings, and recieve a mothers care and teaching.

Do you think that would work, with this baby probably being a mouse, not a rat? If it is a rat indeed yes, she would. She nursed wild babies for me before. And they hung out with my babies and did well.

I just thought of this, but can you tell the PEW's from birth, by the fact that their eyes aren't dark-colored?

The final count is 13, not as bad as I thought!

Babies!! :thud:
I heard that some litters can be 20 or more so 13 isn't too bad.
The last two litters for me were 10 and 12.
What happened to the baby in the last pix?
It looks like it has blood on him. :(

I'm pretty positive it's just blood she hasn't cleaned off of him yet from the birth.

She's a great momma. Just so overprotective! But that's good I suppose.

I know this was an unexpected, upsetting surprised, but hey...babies! <3 <3 <3 What cutie pies they are. Kisses to mama Lilith. It sounds like she's doing a good job with them.

I'm looking at the pictures and all I can think of is  How in heaven did they all fit inside of a momma rat???? Never met a pregnant ratty lady and it shows, I suppose.

But that baby ratpile is lovely. I'll definitely be following their story... and fighting extra hard to protect my heart from getting stolen... :panic:

When I was looking for a foster mother for my orphaned mouse, it was suggested that a rat mom would be best. They are more likely to take the orphan then a female mouse would.

Also awwww, cute pink babies.

As much as I DID NOOOOOT want babies, I already love the little farts. They're soo tiny, but grew overnight I swear.

As soon as I sex them I'll start looking for homes.

They are beautiful! I'm glad the birthing went OK.
The light eyes can end up being pink or ruby, so there are still many colour combinations possible with those babies!

They change so fast. I can see who's dark and who's light, one looks to be a dark hooded. I'll try to get pics that show it.

Aww :( One of the light-colored babies looks like he's not going to make it.. I don't know if maybe momma smothered him or what, but he's the runt and was gasping for air, no sign of damage, no mucus or anything around his nose, he wasn't moving anything but his mouth.

Poor guy.

The rest are seemingly fine, and fat. And we do have a hooded one. It's pretty obvious now.

I'm so sorry to hear about the little one :sad3:! It just sounds like sometimes the wee ones don't make it.

It looks like momma is doing a wonderful job with them though, they all look full, comfy and happy!

I'm going to check and make sure the runty passed before I go to bed. He looked very near-death when I saw him.

Poor little runty baby. Sometimes there are things wrong with them, like a heart problem, that we can't see, or do anything about. I hope he passed snuggled with his family...
