My boy named Chocolat is covered in lice and we're having problems getting rid of them. Is there anything I can use or do to help him? I was wondering if there were products out there that I could purchase, if not we'll need to head to the vet. Any help is appreciated!!

You will more than likely need to go to the vet for some revolution (think that works on lice??), but in the mean time im sure some people have soaked their rats in olive oil to try and suffocate the lice - its only a temporary situation because you can't get the eggs, but if its really bad it might be worth while trying

Yep, I've done a few olive oil baths and it really helped in killing the live lice, but it's the eggs that are sticking and I'm having a problem getting rid of them. He's been better since I did the olive oil baths because he's not scratching anymore, but those eggs hatch soon enough :( .

If a visit to the vet is a must, will they inject or give Revolution topically or orally? I'd prefer no injection.

i imagine it would be topically, but i live on the opposite side of the world and have never had the experience of revolution lmao. im sure you could ask them first

You'll want a tube of revolution; it's a topical droplet. You'd want the cat/kitten one I think it's in a mauve box? That's what you'd ask for at the vet anyway -- a tube of feline revolution.

If like me you can't *get* revolution or your vet won't prescribe it to you, you can use oral ivermectin paste (the horse wormer). Dosage and stuff here: http://ratguide.com/health/integumentar ... asites.php

After you dose them, be SURE that you scrub down the entire cage with bleach. Wash or throw away all of your hammocks and freeze anything that's made out of wood. Also freeze your bedding overnight to kill any buggies in it.

Trust me, I feel for ya! My vet was insisting on doing a lime-sulfur dip for the rats and it never got rid of everything (and was expensive) so we were lice-infested for weeks before I gave up and bought the ivermectin. Three rounds of ivermectin later and no lice. So....yeah.

I was reading up on ivermectin earlier, and am hoping it's available locally without a prescription, or am I hoping too hard? ;) If it is I'll run out and get is ASAP, I read you'd need to empty the whole tube in a recloseable container so it mixes really well, is this true?

Thanks so much for the tips!

Quick update; my local feed store carries Ivermectin in these brands; Eqvalan Gold & Padamac (sp?), which would be best? Are they all the same? I'm obviously trying to find something that won't harm my rat.

Yep, any oral ivermectin in the dose I linked to you will work fine. I decanted mine into an empty pill bottle and dosed it to them with a toothpick and it worked great. Also it's a lot cheaper than revolution, the whole tube cost me like maybe $6. Although Revolution you only need one dose and the ivermectin you have to follow up. But no prescription needed, just go to a feed store. Good luck!

I have gotten revolution, and advantage from the vet, works well
Advantage should not be used on rats.

That's what my vet wants to use on my rattie.

Awesome, so I'll be buying this on Friday then hopefully we'll be lice free in 3 weeks! I'll probably have more questions as we go along, thanks guys!
