Hi, I jsut noticed my little girl is graspign for air or breathign very heavy. I dont know what to do , but as ar as I remember, that is a very bad sign... Just my luck no one is in chat or on the fb group to help me and I am freakign out.... Help me, hat do I do, what could this be.. I am so worried and wrose I am leavign for 2 days in the morning.. ugh

Okay so I took a video

Victoria was helping me in chat, she says it is probably pneumonia. I hate that I wont be here tomorrow to bring her to the vet, but my mom will take her for sure. She seems to have calmed down a bit, not breathing quite as heavy. I steamed her in the shower for a few minutes. didnt help the breathing but now she gets a good snort in every once in a while. . Vic says she isnt gasping so that is a hue relief.

An hour ago I thoguht she was gonna die in my arms :( Never had a sick rat before save a year ago when La Jolla had a minor uri ) And when La Jolla ( see a pattern here) got that bite a few months ago). So not liking this " oldies" thing.

So glad that your mom can take her to the vet. Is your vet experienced with rats? Make sure to ask for a pair of antibiotics. Usually Baytril and Doxycycline. In the short term the vet might give you a bronchodilator such as the anal equivalent of ventolin.

Yes he is very good with rats. I have only been to him once personally but Little Mischief Rescue uses him as well, both my boys were even neutered there. I will write down the drugs to tell my mm so she can make sure she gets 2. Just wish I coudl be there too.

Poor little one, it does look quite severe, most likely pneumonia. I hope the meds will kick in fast. I've had a few rats who were gasping and ended up recovering with meds.

Okay so apparently she took them toa different vet.. But i got Baytril and Doxy, for all 3! Only Dante was healthy! The others was URI, La jolla, pneumonia liek suspected... But the vet really onyl wanted to give baytril I fought tooth and nail over it via text. But now my parenmts want to wait to see ... I jsut wan tto give her both. becasue honestly I dont wan tto risk it. THe other 2, with jsut uri ., ya jsut baytrill will be fine... but UGH I dotn wan tot wait to give her the doxya dn have her regress.... At leas tI am hoem now..

One med is ok for sneezing but pneumonia and labored breathing they need two. It is harder to fight at that point.

Okay so we will be giving her both (I refused to not) But we coudlnt get the Doxy today ( trouble at the pharmacy sicne it has to be compounded) Hopefully getting it tomorrow. she si still laboured breathing : ( I feel so bad we couldnt get the meds tongiht

She is looking better, all of them are still active and playing and eating. She si still laboured breathing but it is less noticable now. i thinkt he doxy is really helping.

Unfortunatly, Dante jsu tdeveloped a squeaky breath and sneezes today so now All of my rats are on meds. Doxy and Baytrill for all. sigh. luckily it is only La Jolla that has the laboured breath.

So its been a week on Baytril ( almost ) and they started the doxy on saturday and I am not really seeign an improvment in any of them...

:"(

La Jolla is still breathign super hard, and is walking with an arch, her fur loosk smoother but honestly she can hardly breath. The others are still all squeaky too and sneezey : (

I have a follow up vet appointment on saturday morning.. i even boguht an air purifier last night doesnt seem to be helping any of them.

I am just at a loss, I would have thought that i woudl see soem improvment by now...

Try baytril + azithromycin (10mg to 15mg/454.4grams).
That combo has helped many rats.
If you have a rat with fluid in it's lungs, it may need lasix (as needed) for awhile.

Sometimes a steriod will help if there is inflamation.
Sometimes a human "puffer" will help in for the short term if things get really bad.
All things to discuss with your vet.

good luck

Okay thanks, I will write that all down to talk about.

So tonight La Jolla was kinda dehydrated ( did the skin test) so I tried to give her some ensure but she wouldn't drink it.. I ended up syringe feeding her about 1.5 mls.. then I thought maybe she would drink some water but she wouldn't drink any water either.. so I syringed her about 1 ml of water as well.. She is still kinda dehydrated.. but wont take any more liquids. When she si out of the cage she like to run around end explore.. but in the cage she is always on the top shelf, just sitting there : ( I moved a water bottle closer to her but I don't think she will use it.. I guess I will have to syringe feed her for now : ( .. Her breathing is so bad too : ( her whole body shakes and she walks all arched, holding her tummy up high like she is tip toeing..

Okay so I gave her another half a syringe ( .5 ml) of water.. she seems a bit less dehydrated.. She was getting antsy on the bed and kept going back to the cage tryign to climb on so I put her back : ( I just cant help but worry.. If she si still dehydrated/ not eating much should I bring her to the vet early? I have the appointment on saturday.. or should I just keep syringe feeding her until then? I feel like I am doing everything I can do but she still isn't getting better : ( The not eating and not wanting any ensure or water just screams bad news to me : ( The others went nuts for it.. she would just sniff it then walk away

I just don't know, I am so heart broken .. I had a good cry when she was out just now.. I dont know what I will do if I lose her...
