Hey guys,

so backstory, we got two male rats from Petsmart two months ago. There were four total in the cage-brothers – none of which were socialized. At the time they were about eight or nine months old and had been there most of their life. The two I took have taken that full two months to really start to become friendly… And even now it’s only On their terms and they get scared quite easily and need to be able to run back into their cage at all times.

anyway, I kept thinking about the brothers I left behind. And I couldn’t imagine anyone was going to take them with how not friendly they were. So two nights ago I went back to see if they were still there and lo and behold they were so I brought them home. they are in my living room in a quarantine cage away from their brothers who are in my bedroom downstairs.

They are pretty scared, although the black one, Potter, will let me very briefly touch him and I can pick him up- but only for a split second and he freaks out. Anyway he’s a rat in question today… He is black with some other colors mixed in but he has two symmetrical spots on his back that appear from a distance to be white but up close also look like their might be hair thinning in those areas as well. There is most def some white fur- I’m just not sure how much of the white spot is fur versus skin.

anyway, I can’t hold him long enough to examine it and I’m a bit worried it could be something like mites or ringworm. I am particularly worried about ringworm because I dealt with it a couple of years ago in a kitten and it ran rampant through my Family. Absolutely horrid case of ringworm. My kids were covered in it! I only had a few spots, but my immune system was down from stress (from other situations) and I ended up with infections in the ringworm spot and had to go to the hospital and it was awful. I most definitely have anxiety over that so I’m probably just overreacting. But I wanted to see what others think.

I am posting pictures of the rat in question. Any opinions are appreciated!

I don't think I can be much help on the actual issue, but I may be able to help with the other issue about socialization. There is a good reference thread on here with some really helpful info, you may want to check it out. Also, check out www.joinrats.com for some good info on socializing and www.ratguide.com for some good info on health stuff. I hope you figure out the hair issue, and get all 4 rats socialized and happy. Thanks for going back and getting the other two boys. I'm sure they were scared and sad after their brothers left them. Welcome to the forum!

it looks like thinning fur possibly by his cagemate overgrooming him there. Its even so I don't think its anything like ringworm. I assume he has been on a poor diet as they don't look in the best condition. See how he does without the stress, on a better diet etc.

thank you so much! That makes me feel much better. They definitely aren’t in the greatest of condition and it’s really interesting to watch them because they’re clearly not used to being able to move around. The other two were like that originally as well now they race over their kid nice and agile! These two walks so tentatively now like they really just don’t know what to expect or what to do or even how to do it

That's so sad! I'm so glad they will have a better life now! By the way, oxbow makes an adult rat food that's what everyone recommends. They will look so healthy and shiny in no time! The seed mixes are bad for them.

thank you! I’ve been feeding the other two select science rat food which is one of the top foods that I read for rat food. It is a block food and has worked really really well for the other two. I also give daily produce (really paying attention to vitamin rich foods for the new two. Poor babies) and occasionally add in small amounts of seed mixes and also an oatmeal/cereal mix for variety. They always have the Main food available though.

The two new boys are still mostly in hiding although have been coming out when things are quiet to explore the cage. If I’m sitting quietly in the room I’m able to watch them without them retreating. It’s interesting to see them learning to be allowed to move around. They definitely aren’t very active yet but they’re getting better. Hopefully it won’t be long until they’re really healthy and active
