I live in a flat in an old building and now and again I see wood lice walking across the corner of my carpet. My 5 male rats have a free run of the room for about 2hours a night and once I noticed one of my rats notice a woodlouse, jump on it and eat it in seconds. Didnt think this was too bad as they arent toxic and they rarely see them. Last night i noticed what looks like a woodlouse spider in the room, its bite is meant to sting but not be toxic to people. Should I worry about one of my rats finding it and eating it?

They may not be toxic to humans, but could be to animals. You said the bite/sting is bad. I wouldn't let my pets eat them if at all possible. Worse case call your vet and ask them.

My first instinct is to say no worries but after reading eagle's reply, she has a point, you just never know. I do know that in the wild rats eat bugs all the time but then again, their lifespan is very short. I like the idea of calling your vet and finding out first hand.

While obviously you can only do so much (my rats have gotten harmless bugs a couple times despite my best efforts) wild bugs can carry icky endoparasites- :sick2:
