I've had two different people in the last 2 days tell me that introducing male rats is nearly impossible. is this true? should i keep trying or should i keep them just in their separate cages next to each other, but out of harms way from one another?

bah.

I haave 21 males in one group, 14 in the other not impossible aat sometime difficult though

Neutering often helps if you want to go that route, but its not guaranteed. I have one boy who consistently beat up other boys despite being neutered, but he gets along swimmingly with the ladies.

TheRatQueen has all boys, some neutered, some intact - as I recall, they're not altogether in one group, but she's managed to make sure everyone's got a buddy at least.

Its not impossible. Im no expert but a month or so ago i introduced two 3 months old (Bambi & Thumper) to a 6 month old (Teddy). It was actually pretty okay, only one slice. But i hear mine was one of the easier intros by males. Im sure if you keep at it they will eventually be okay with each other.

I've done countless of intros and have always been successful but it requires patience and understanding. Sometimes intros are done in a day while others can take months.
Neutering is also a plus!

No. I keep all males, and can affirm that patience and proper intros can help almost any male rats bond and live together. If all else fails, a neuter will do the trick for the aggressor.
