**Update**
Hi again everyone
I am heartbroken to say that my poor baby girl is no longer with us. She fought taking her meds on Tuesday night and when I woke up on Wednesday morning she was gone. She was only hours away from seeing the vet :(
I noticed on Monday or Tuesday night that her thing was gone, so I called the vet and changed her appointment to see what had happened. She was getting a little more aggressive but she had energy and was gaining a little weight..
I'm so sad. I can't believe she was so close to getting to the vet to get better.
Thank you all again for your help through her sickness. She wouldn't have had such a great last week without all of you.

Hi everyone
Thanks so much for your concern about Indie. I definitely would not have been able to get through this without your help and support :hugs: :cuddle:

Indie is (in my opinion) doing much better. She doesn't feel anywhere near as skinny as before, she's drinking and eating more which means she's also going to the bathroom! Not only that but her tumor has gotten much, much smaller and isn't protruding as far, and its not bloody or anything at all anymore. Woo!!

The only problem is she is still in lots of pain. Yesterday I noticed she was walking funny, and then she starting shaking really badly. At first I thought it was a seizure but she didn't fall over and it only lasted a few seconds, and she seemed perfectly aware of everything that was happening. After that I figured she may have been lonely, so I brought up Sensi to visit, since they've been cage mates since Sensi was a baby. After that, Indie's heart rate and breathing dropped and she was really cool to the touch. I was freaking out and managed to get ahold of my vet, who told me that it was probably a pain reaction. I had gotten her meds into her at this point and she had calmed down so I think it makes sense.

The only thing that still worries me is how much she HATES her medication. Her pain meds usually aren't so bad, its her anti-biotics that she almost refuses to take. But this morning, she bit me, and I mean HARD. In 2 years and 7 rats, I have NEVER been bit. She latched on to the point where I let go and she was still hanging on. Because I've never had to deal with it before, I had no idea what to do!

How can I make it easier on her to take her meds? I've tried cheese but she wants no part in it, she's stopped taking food from my hands since this thing has popped up, so I'm not sure what to do.

Thank you again! You're all so wonderful  :cuddle: :hugs:

Hi guys
If anyone could offer me any help or any advice I'd be eternally greatful. My girl Indica, she's probably about 2, randomly developed this.. thing on her belly the other day and I'm super worried about her. She doesn't seem to want to eat or drink anything, I've seperated her from the others in a smaller cage but she doesn't seem to want to move or do anything.
I'm going to try to take her to the vet this week but if anybody has any ideas or advice please let me know!!!

It could be a prolapsed uterus, she needs a vet ASAP!
You are in Sudbury Ontario? Call the Lasalle Animal Clinic and tell them you suspect a prolapsed uterus or something is coming out of her vagina. They should be able to get you in sooner rather than later.
Lasalle Animal Clinic is the only place in Sudbury that sees exotics.

Oh my lord. My poor baby :(
I went down to check on her this morning right after I posted and shes eaten quite a bit of the food in her bowl and she seems a lot more like her old self again, coming over to investigate and everything, so I think being away from the others is helping her destress a little bit.
Is there anything I can do to help her before I get her to the vet? Give her a bath to help her clean? Can I give her anything for any pain she might be in?

Thank you for letting me know about the vet by the way! I thought Martindale looked after exotics as well but I will absolutely call Lasalle. Thank you!!

You need to keep it lubricated, if you have KY jelly on hand you should lather that are in it. Keep her warm and hydrated.
edited, there is another vet who "thinks" he can do exotics but Dr Vannevel is constantly having to "fix" his mistakes.

Well I definitely want to get my girl fixed just once! I found some Jelly so I'll go put some of that on right away. I've got recycled paper bedding in her cage right now, but I was thinking maybe I should just put towels or old socks in there so it isn't rough against whatever is coming out of her.

You could also use newspaper.

Really? I thought you weren't supposed to use newspaper because of the inks. But I have a bunch of old newspapers so that would be great, especially if they won't rub as bad.

@Ratsforever -- she's a little more lively than last night. I haven't tried to take her out of her cage yet to get a look at her belly and whatever's coming out because I don't want to move her until I absolutely have to. When I go down and change her bedding and everything I'll take more pictures.
I gave her only fresh foods last night, no mix, and I added some extra vitamin drops to her water too. She was really lethargic and uninterested yesterday but she seems to have more energy today, so fingers crossed.!

Oh I am sorry, poor little Indica! Yes explain when you call them that you have a prolapsed uterus and its an emergency and hopefully they will fit you in soon.

I would put her on fleece or clean sheets (keep her away from the others)...as other things may stick and dry to the exposed uterus tissue, and that would be awful to take off. In this case they will need to do an emergency spay to save her.

let us know what the clinic says? I would call and leave a message if they aren't open yet, and also keep calling once they do open.

(((hugs)))

I also have a very insensitive question for you. Could I borrow your picture for my medical album? I help a lot of people online on all sorts of rat forums and having a picture to show someone when they are trying to describe it cuts to the chase quickly especially in emergencies. Your little Indica's picture could help a lot of rats for years and years.

Absolutely. You can feel free to use the whole album, I know I couldn't find anything on what was happening so anything that can help someone else from worrying all night like I did!
Thanks so much for your help everyone. They just opened not long ago so I'm going to call now

OMG! That is exactly what Angele's protrusion looks like, right down to the same area too!!! Wow! The vet I got her into see says, and we will know tomorrow, it's possibly a tumor and he will attempt to remove it tomorrow (Thursday).

Listen, your picture of 'it' is AWESOME! I couldn't get Angele to quit wiggling long enough to get a good picture of 'it'.

Yep! off to the vet the you two go!...My fingers & toes are crossed for a good outcome for Indica!!! I am still shaking my head at the almost identical place and shape of the protrusion on Indica as is on Angele!!!

I'll let you know how things turn out for my little Angele tomorrow.

Hi everyone
I just want to say THANK YOU first of all! I was basically beside myself this morning, Indie was really my first rat and I was so worried about her I didn't know what to do. You all had great advice and set me on the path of a great vet. I was in class when they closed and was unable to pick her up, and they said they would have to charge me a boarding fee for keeping her over night. But, while I was arranging to get someone to pick her up quickly, they called back and said not to worry.

If anyone in Sudbury has issue's, so far so good with Lasalle!!

@Momofmany, I'm sorry that you and Angele are suffering :( Hopefully everything goes well for the both of us. I honestly just happen to be really 'lucky' (if you can call it that) and am renting a professional digital camera for my photography class. If I didn't there's no way I could've gotten a good picture. She was super unhappy with me for flipping her over, which is why a few pictures in the album are from underneath her.

Those pictures are not copyright in anyway, so anyone and everyone please feel free to use them for whatever purpose. When I talk to the vet tomorrow I'll let you all know what they say.

Again, thank you thank you thank you!

To be honest I have no idea what happened today. I dropped her off around 1 this afternoon and they said on the phone that they were booked but they would see what they could do. They called me just before 5 while I was in my 4-7 class and said that she was ready to go, but by the time I called back they were closing up. That's when they said they might have to charge the boarding fee (which they didn't) and they asked if I had time to speak to the vet, but because I was in class I couldn't. I'm going to go tomorrow morning to pick her up and talk to the vet so I'll let you know as soon as I do!

:sad3: :(
I just brought Indie back home. She's anorexic and has laboured breathing after being handled, but everything else is okay. The vet said she thinks its a tumor and she requires surgery. Right now I've got some anti-biotics and some pain killers until I can figure out what to do next.

The estimate they gave me for surgery is $387.28, which is something I absolutely can't afford. The surgery itself is only 46.08 but the anesthesia is 157.30 and the histopathology is 136.00, but thats optional. Does anybody know of any alternatives to laboratory anesthetic that work? There has to be something I can do to bring the price down.

I've got enough anti-botics to last just over a week and enough pain killers for almost a month. Indica is the first rat that I can truly say was mine, and I know she's over 2 but she's still my baby.

The nurse also said that theres a 50/50 chance of there being some sort of complication with the anesthesia.

I'm so torn right now.
