How are they doing? They are dee-lish-ous! I am completely over the moon about them and am seriously considering getting some of my own (remember these boys technically aren't mine, they're my daughter's)! Just the other day, I got a, "seriously, Mom. You're turning into a Crazy Rat Lady!", from her. And . . . "those rats eat better than we do", from my husband.

I always knew that rats were very intelligent, endearing creatures who make excellent pets and yet I still find myself amazed at how quickly they learn and how affectionate and loving they can be with their humans!

We are truly enjoying them (and I don't know about my daughter, but I'M hooked!) They've been nothing short of wonderful and we can honestly say, we have absolutely no regrets!

How's Basil doing? Better, I hope!

you have every right to turn into a crazy rat lady (along with all the rest of us Rat Shack Gals!!!) :laugh4:

Rats are glorious animals!!! I want to introduce the guy I'm dating to Ben and Basil. He doesn't quite know what to think about rats and I have every intention of introducing them. I have a feeling that he will take to them once he has had a nose in his ear. :love4:

By all means Gina.... rescue a few more "little" faces for yourself!!!! The more the merrier!!!!! Do you have pet insurance for the rats? VPI has actually done well in reimbursing me for Basil's treatments; some of which were expensive (x-rays cost $100!!!!) :)

Basil is back on Meloxicam and Baytril for 7 and 14 days. If the swelling goes away but comes back then I will take him in for bloodwork, to determine exactly what he is suffering from, and get him on the right antibiotics! Otherwise, he is doing well. He has taken to licking the tip of my nose. :laugh4:

Good Luck with the intro's Jen. If your BF doesn't like them, then he's probably not a keeper!

I think I probably will end up getting a few boys all of my very own. I find myself spending entirely too much time on this Forum or sneaking up to my daughter's room to be with them!

I really haven't thought about pet insurance since I looked into it for the dogs and found it wasn't really cost effective (it may be a different story for the rats though). I've been making sure EarlGrey sets a little bit of money aside for veterinary costs each and every week and, of course, we'll help her out in that regard if need be.

Hopefully this course of antibiotics will be the charm for Basil. Keep us posted on his progress.

Swellings going down and the Baytril started up only 2 days ago!!!

Let's hope the next 12 days of Baytril treatment will kill off whatever Basil has! If not, Dr. Richards will take some blood and analyse what Basil really has... then we will attack the nasty sucker with some appropriate antibiotics and get it out of my little rat man's system!!!

He is also losing weight. His belly doesn't drag on the floor anymore.

Basil's been a going concern, eh? Are you sure his brain isn't bigger than his strains? One side then the other? I suppose one way to upstage Ben if alpha isn't easily available is to hog all mom's attention... and play it for all it's worth if the menu isn't up to par.

I hope he's all a-ok and is actually just a too-smart pain-in-the-pratt (as my frustrating favorites were). Kisses to Ben!!!

LOL!!!! Now THAT would be one amazing rat, Fidget, if Basil could swell up his little legs with sheer willpower!!! LMAO!!!! :laugh4:

Ben is a self starter type who only "deigns" to come to mom, for cuddles, on rare occasions!!! Basil is a little suck up who sees enough scritches and cuddles for 1000 rats!!!

Basil is a pain-in-the-(p)RATt but he knows it and seems to be happy with his status! :laugh4:
