I got a new girl yesterday who is very verbal... She squeaks at my other rat often (mostly because the other rat is a young pipsqueak who likes to bug her to no end)... But she also frequently chatters and chirps. I noticed a bit of an odd noise she makes occasionally. Like a short high pitched "hoop" almost. Also sometimes while I'm petting her she will chirp or squeak. I can't always recreate it though. Does this sound like illness or injury? Or just new surroundings.
Thanks!

Listen to her lungs by holding her sides (lungs) to.your eat like a phone receiver, wait for her to stop squirming and tell us what you hear
any crackles, wheeled etc are bad

No crackles or wheezing... Just frantic breathing lol. She's still very active and has no problems jumping around...

Rats really should not make any noise except for protesting squeaks. Anymore and I would recommend getting her checked out with a vet.

So I kept close watch and she's doing fine now... I think she was scared and overwhelmed in her new home.
She still squeaks a little at Ursula my younger rat when she gets pushy and rambunctious.
But no more squeaks when I pet her. In fact she was boggling last night while I was watching TV and petting her. Yay!

That's good news. Squeaks are usually sounds of protests. The sounds you don't want to hear are the ones coming from the lungs and nose.
