How to tell if a mating took place - husband in big trouble!

Out of our 28 rats, only ONE of the girls is not spayed. We have Nammie and her daughter living with our elderly girl Dawn in the top portion of a huge cage. Nammie's son's and Joey live in the two sections below.

Nammie, Scout (spayed) and all the boys were out playing, and Dawnie stayed behind (because she is not spayed). We put everyone back after playtime and went about gathering another group.

I walk back in the bedroom to hear some squeaking and find that my #$#%$ husband, accidentally put Joey up with the girls. Joey was in the igloo, getting the what for, from Scout and Dawn is on the upper level....sitting in her box, but all puffy.

He was in the cage for maybe 2-3 minutes.

Dawn is 26 months old, fat, crabby and has a uterine mass. I don't even know if she can get pregnant anymore. But I just have to know how I can tell, if he mated with her. I'm probably just paranoid...but I can't help but ask. OY!

I seriously doubt she would have allowed it at that age. You would have seen her doing the dance, the love dance, hopping around him, enticing him. The female has to want it, needs to be in heat, the male needs to trigger lordosis in the female. (arching of the back, bum in the air) Now if she was just a sweet young thing, then I'd be worried.
Hubby needs a good beating though. LOL

Oh thank you Jo. I have heard that if they have mated, I might really know when I see it. Dawnie looks normal "down there". And she is a bit unapproachable by ones she doesn't know anyway. So what you say makes total sense. I doubt she even had time to think "hmm, oh you are a boy...let me see if I remember how this goes".

Did you check her vagina right away? You might have seen a plug if the boy was successful but then again, it can fall off pretty quick. Her orifice would be a bit bigger and slightly redder too. But you said she looked normal so it was probably one of those heart attack moments but in the safe zone.
