Our female rat had a few hiccuping spells when we first got her and we treated her with antibiotics for a few weeks but every now and then like less than once o a week or two she does it again...should I treat her again for like 4-6 weeks? I posted a video when she started doing this and now our new hairless guy is doing the EXACT same thing, he does it every two days or so. Both are active, eat and drink normally and he is finishing a round of antibiotics.Should I put them both on them for a longer period of time? It seemsodd to me that both would be making vocilizations since they are so rare? Here is the link to the video, this is what he is doing as well...you need to turn it up very loud and the hiccuping starts at about 1:05 thanks

my one boy does that quite a bit as well.. mostly when he wakes up, but sometimes when he's just sitting there.
there's usually no excess prophyrin or anything.. so i don't usually worry too much.
i hope someone can give you some insight, because i'm interested about it as well! :?

"Hiccuping" is a symptom of myco.
If the rat just does it a bit, people don't do anything.
If it happens frequently, treating the rat for myco with antibiotics will clear it up.
Baytril and azithromycin are good for myco.
When rats have a myco flareup, they need to be treated for at least 6 weeks or the symptoms will usually just return.

Is it myco if there is no sound? I've seen 2 of my rats do it, but only one time each like a week ago, and there was no chirping sound. Does it mean a flare up is on the way, or is it just 'one of those things'?

yes.
In my experience, it has not indicated a flare up is on the way.
I treat my rats with antibiotics for myco if it is happening frequently and it stops.
