I left a bag of Ecotrition Yogies! on top of my critter nation. The bag wasn't completely full but definitely had at least 40. Somehow, my girls managed to pull it into the cage while I was in class.

I have 5 rats, will they be okay? Also, one of my rats is nearly overweight and I'm just trying to get that down. Hopefully they'll just have upset tummies and that's all?

I won't be giving them anything sugary for a WHILE, that's for sure

UPDATE just noticed a 2nd bag!! This one was full, they probably didn't eat much from this one

Normally I do not leave treats on top of the cage, but I just did a deep clean and I must've forgotten them!

Ah, ornery ratties…
I wish I could give you good advice, but I am not a rat owner yet. I'm just getting my information now :)
How are they doing? Anyone acting strange?

My chubby girl isn't feeling well but everyone else is okay. I have her laying in my warm bed with me because she felt cold. Shes bruxing now because she is comfortable :)

not much you can do, since rats can not vomit. Hopefully she will be ok.
Just so you area aware, yogies are basically sugar …………… and sugar feeds cancer (as well as fungal infections)
There are many healthy treats you can give your rats instead such as vegs, a piece of fruit, berries, a kumut puff (organic cereal with no additives), a few organic pumpkin seeds etc

I forgot to thank you!
I usually only give yogies when I need to say sorry (i.e I accidentally squish a toe or I skip out on free roam time)
But I had no idea it fed cancer. Thank you for telling me! I won't be giving them any anymore.
The only reason I have so many bags to begin with is because they're a cheap gift on Amazon and during Christmas I got a few.
Are unsalted tree nuts okay? I read somewhere they should be fed sparingly. Good replacement treat? I've also been giving baby cereal as a treat occasionally.

For treats I give mine a mini size chocolate chip or small piece of banana chip (both cheap in the bulk section & keep fresh in the freezer), or 1/2 froot loop. Yes, they all have sugar, and I'm not encouraging it, but they only get 1 in morning and 1 at night, and I believe pleasure = emotional pleasure = physical benefit :)

To be honest, my rats love their vegs and healthy treats …. they really love their organic kumut puffs - which they get instead of a cheerio or yogie and they also love being handed an organic pumpkin seed or 2 or 3 LOL ...… and some fruits, such as a piece of ripe banana has a lot of natural sugar that is healthy because it comes with fibre, vits etc and is not processed
Sorry, I don't know anything about tree nuts but nuts and seeds can be fattening so if given to rats they are given in moderation

btw there is some good info on diet and nutrition in our Reference Thread
