Oh gosh! What about my air purifier? It's on 24/7 and has a UV light that kills mold, bacterie and allergens!
At 300$ this thing works! I used to smell my boys the second i walked in here before but since i got the air purifier... nothing.
Since it kills so much things invisible to the eyes maybe it's a good thing to have for rat owners! I personnaly have it because of allergies.

It has a washable filter or you have to option to buy a filter that removes odor every 3 months.. but really i change mine every 4-5 months. As for the UV light my fan has been on for over a year and there's no notice on it yet telling me to change it.

After experiencing SV I avoid pet stores whenever possible (thinking back I actually can't remember the last time I was in a store that sold animals) and I have no idea if an air purifier would help or not but I wouldn't risk it and there's no need to with all the pet supply stores and online sites available. They are both extremely scary viruses and I don't even want to think about how bad it could have been if Shelagh hadn't of caught it as early as she did.

I guess you're right... wow and i've been in a few pet stores in the past few days. I hope nothing will happen! This post made me paranoid i think.

It's just best to avoid stores that sell animals all together. Anyone that is going to hand over an animal to the first person that walks through the door with enough money does not have their (or your pet's) best interests in mind and giving them business, even if just for supplies, only reinforces their practices. It takes a bit of work and searching, but it is possible to all of your animal supplies from stores that don't sell animals, and often you can save money.

I wholeheartedly agree with Victoria. I haven't had to buy anything at all from an animal-selling store in a couple years now. I'm constantly buying new things for the rescue, so trust me it *is* possible to avoid pet stores altogether!

Pet stores are places to avoid as they are always bringing in new animals that may be carrying these diseases.
However, those diseases are out there so it is important to be as careful as possible, knowlegeable, and to act quickly if your rats become ill.

Thanks for making me aware that the 3 hour rule doesn't always apply .... too bad .... it was a pain but helped to reduce the risk.
