Well we're back and Rose seems to be doing well. I didn't get much of a chance to really talk to Dr. Stuart about the details since he was SUPER busy when I got there but he said that they decided to start with the bottom tooth as it would be easier since its not connected to all the sinuses etc. He said it was more difficult than he thought it was going to be and she lost a lot of blood, for that reason he left the top tooth (trimmed it down of course). We will see over the coming weeks how the bottom tooth fairs, hopefully there will be no infection or regrowth, if all goes well we will attempt the top tooth.
Rose seems to be perky, and ran around her cage when we got home, now she is cuddled up in a rat pile. I think she will do well, she is one tough cookie.

poor little sweetie .. i hope it all goes well for her .. and hugs to u too! i kno its no picnic to be the mama when your little one is hurting

Whew! Glad she is recovering OK, despite the loss of blood. Poor little ratties don't have a lot to spare, and that sounds like risky surgery. If her teeth are abnormal, maybe the blood supply etc is also abnormal.

Kisses and banana mash to her!

Wonderful news to hear Rose came out fine the first time around! Poor sweet girl those teeth look horrible. Sending healing vibes and rattie scritches your way!

Thanks everyone for being so supportive. She is still doing well, eating and drinking but she was quite swollen. So after talking with some very helpful people on chat last night I decided to call the vet today. I never even asked about meds when I was there the first time  so I was afraid maybe they forgot to give me some. They said they gave her a 24 hour shot but since she was swollen she needed more. She is now on Metcam and Doxy. I just have to make sure I do it right,

Poor little girl, she looks like I did when I had my wisdom teeth surgically removed. I cannot for the life of me get a picture, neither her nor the camera are being cooperative.

Dont say that!! I am going in January 27th to get one of mine surgically removed

I hope her problems are over soon

Ugh, I'm having some trouble giving her the Doxy.. Metcam was no problem,
Tell me if I'm doing this right: For the Doxy I took 20 mls of applesauce and mixed one pills worth of doxy into it, then of course I couldn't get the applesauce/Doxy back into the syringe so I got just 1 ml (supposed to give her 1 ml twice a day) back into the syringe... buuut now she won't eat it. How do you guys do it?>

Yes, add lots of sweetener. Doxy is very bitter, and some rats are particularly sensitive to bitter tastes. the Nesquick does a great job usually.

I have been mixing my Doxy by adding the crushed pill to 2ml water plus 2 ml strawberry Nesquick. Then I give the rat .2ml of the mix (approx 1/20 of a pill). I add extra Nesquick and sometimes a bit of baby cereal (make sure the calcium level is low, though) to make it more palatable. You have to avoid giving anything high in Calcium near to the time of the meds, because calcium interferes with Doxy.

Thank you all for the great support and doxy help (Godmother), Rose is doing really well and the swelling is waaaay down, there is still a little round area under her mouth but no where near as bad as it was. She is still perky although she does seem to frequently have dried blood on her arm and chin. She is eating and drinking well and I've resolved not to worry unless she stops doing that or becomes lethargic. Again thank you all! I will update when we return to the vet for her check up.

Well after Christmas and New Year and all that stuff we went back to the vet because sadly her bottom tooth had grown back. It was like nothing had ever happened. The vet was very disappointed and said he must not have gotten all of the root. Does anyone know anything else that could help us with her tooth? possibly a vet who had successfully removed teeth in the past that I could get in touch with (so I can get my vet in touch with them)?

That's unfortunate. My vet once did a tooth extraction on my sister's rat, she found it came out easy. But she doesn't recommend a tooth extraction on rats. She believes it's best to trim at the gum line.

One of my girls got all 4 front teeth removed and none have grown back. I'm not sure how they did it but it was extremely well done and no problems despite her teeth being quite a bit deeper than some others they have removed... sadly I'm in the UK so the vets wouldn't be able to help at all :(
