Eve - Respiratory

Eve came to me in Osctober, she was left at my local supply store ..her owners brought her in, cage and all ..they no longer wanted her. When I seen her, It was love at first site ..I know the girl that works there, she said I could take her ..as they don't carry pets.
She was in a decent cage, on aspen shavings but eating seed food and all alone. Her fur was also very thin, as well as her and she had lice, also her age is unknown.
Her eyes were also full of porph with a few sneezes ..no breathing sounds though. We put her on Baytril the end of October, after 3 weeks ..there was still no difference ..no worse either ..so we added doxy ..she did great on the combo ..she was also on the highest recommened dose for her weight. After 8 weeks we stopped the meds as she was doing great ..but the symptoms returned, not as bad ..so we started her again ..then we tried to lower the dose ..but her symptoms only went away with the highest dose. So she is still on the same dose ..but she has gained a bit of weight now and I am not sure if I should increase the amount I am giving her ..as her symptoms have returned again ..both eyes have porph and a little bit of sneezes ..but she is very active and breathing well.

She was 284 grams when I got her, now she's 315 grams.

The medication I have:

Baytril: 5ml baytril (250 mg) diluted with 10 ml tutti fruitty - which works out to be 50mg/ml inj. Diluted to 25mg/ml ?

She is currently getting 1.2 ml twice a day.

Doxycycline 500 mg capsule, mix 1 capsule with 50 ml of liquid

She is currently getting 1.5 mls twice a day.

Her weight now is: 315 grams.

I do have an appointment for Saturday regarding trying to get her put on Zithro & Baytril.

So you haven't stopped the meds at all right? I'd get her switched to zithro on Saturday and see how that goes.
Any changes lately? The FN is not a new cage to her is it? What about meeting the new rat, has intros started?

By the sounds of it you have already started meds? How long has she been on doxy/baytril this time? In future it would be best to wait to get the zithro because it isn't usually a good idea to change abs part way through the course of the meds. I hope a zithro/baytril combo will do the trick.

Nope, she is still on the Baytril + Doxy combo.
She started Baytril October 31st ..after 3 weeks there was no change, so my vet said to add doxy ..so Nov 21st she started Doxy + Baytril and has been on it since, still at the same dose after gaining 31 grams.
How long should I do the zithro for? 30 days?

The FN is not new, but Chloe is living with them now, BUT these symptoms started before this. (only started living together yesterday, no intro was needed ..I put them in the bath tube with no water ..and 10 mins later they were all curled up in the corner sleeping haha) ..no change since the intro ..not any better or worse.

...... so 15 (5 + 10) ml of 250 mg of baytril = 16.7 mg/ml of baytril

= 20 mg
so at 10 mg/454.4 g she needs to get 0.69 or 0.7 ml twice a day .... either she is being overdosed or you mean you are giving her 0.12 ml

= 10 mg/ml
She is currently getting 1.5 mls twice a day.
= 15 mg twice a day ....
The dose for doxy is 2.5 - 5 mg/454.4g. At her weight she should be getting 1.7 to 3.47 mg twice a day.
If your numbers are correct, that would be approx. 0.17 mls to 0.35 mls twice a day.
Are you sure you don't mean 0.15 ml?

If it was diluted, then the concentration of baytril is not correct.

What exactly is the concentration of baytril?
(I understand the 50 mg/ml, just wondering if the tutti fruitt was added to some amount of baytril ? and from the way it is written I assume the dilution occurred before the correct amount of meds was measured out. Thus the concentration of 25 mg/ml would be incorrect.)

At a dosage of 10 mg/454.4 g she needs to get 6.9 mg twice a day = 0.28 ml of baytril twice a day

As for the doxy:
At her weight she should be getting 1.7 to 3.47 mg twice a day.

Lilspaz68 and I are using different dosage info.
She is using the lower end and I am using the higher end.
What you are giving is close enough to the lower end that it may not make much difference.

I could up the baytril & doxy to see if that will make a difference. I never knew it was the lower end.

I have one rat here Big Max, I give him a high dose of Baytril because the lower one simply doesn't cut it. You could always try and give the higher dose see if that improves but watch for any loss of appetite, runny poop or becoming lethargic.

So right now she's getting Baytril 0.13 & doxy 0.15 ..what should I move it too?

Personally, I'd be ditching the doxy, I've never liked it and found it to be of no use after 2 weeks. But that's just my personal opinion and experience.
The Baytril is diluted to 25mg, all my females get 0.15 as their low dose. When I feel we need to kick it hard, I do 0.2
