Hi everyone,

So, I am trying to litter train my bay girls. I bought a small litter pan (until I get the bigger cage, then I will upgrade to a ferret one) and tied it to the corner of the cage where I find the most poops and wet bedding.

I put Super pet small animal litter in it, added some poops and backed away. Within 30 seconds, two out of three of my girls was in the litter pan eating the tiny pieces of litter.

At first, I thought they were just tasting it, but they each finished a piece and went back for more. Although the box says non-toxic, I did not know if it was ok for them to eat it or if it would hurt potential litter training, so I dumped it and replaced it with left over carefresh (I switched them to ecobedding a while ago).

I left and when I came back they had pulled all the carefresh out of the box. One of the girls is using it to some extent w or w/out the carefresh (I keep replacing it and someone keeps pulling it out.) but I dont think the other's are as there is not enough poop in it and I am finding poop in other spots.

Any tips on litter training 3 girls at once?

Is it safe to use the litter I purchased even though they were nibbling on it?

Thanks,

Laura

I use Yesterday News in my litter pans and some rats do nibble on it from time to time. They even carry it to their nests. I don't worry about it. For training just keep picking up their poos and put them in the litter pan. Eventually most of them will get the idea. As for pee mine just go anywhere. lol

My rats have always refused to be trained - so I've given up  Not sure about the eating litter thing, rats do eat some of their poops, though, but they need it for protein. What litter do you use? Over here, in South Africa, cat litter is the best :)

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice!!!!

Maybe ill switch to yesterday's news. It just stinks cause I already have two small boxes of this superpet litter...but it will cost more to return it then it did to buy it....I hate to see it go to waste. :-(

I'll just keep on putting the poop in the pan. lol

Thanks again!

I had purchased some superpet small animal litter to try....and they just seem to wanna eat it! lol It looks similar to cat litter, but in smaller and less dusty. It says on the box it is non toxic and made from minerals.... maybe thats why they like it

Nimmel thinks that Yesterday's New in the litter box is some sort of All You Can Nom buffet.

She is a rather special fuzzball.
