I just noticed (while doing my daily check of Lily's stitches from her tumour removal last week) a round, scabby, dried blood area on her back hip, about the size of a penny or a bit smaller. It doesn't smell, it's flat, not swollen, but kind of crusty. Has anyone seen anything like this? It's strange I never noticed it before. Sorry the two pics aren't the greatest, no one is home right now to help me hold her, part her fur, and take a shot.

Thanks Jorats, sounds like a strong possibility! I can call the vet tomorrow and ask about injection site...where it was. I'm keeping an eye on it, nothing has changed so far....hoping that it's a simple thing, and temporary and that it heals and disappears! Poor Lily has been through enough.

Is she on meds right now? Maybe Baytril might help with the healing, or maybe try polsyporin. It's not "open" right? It's like a rug burn?

If it won't heal with meds, I would take your rattie to a vet. I've had it in one of my girls ... she ended up with several tumours in her belly (not mammary tumors). Vet said it may have been a form of skin cancer and that it may have spread. I don't want to sound alarmist but if doesn't heal you may want to have it removed if possible.

I tried the Polysporin but her sister Iris licked at if as if it was yummy ice cream. :wallbang: I'll ask the vet some questions, and see what he thinks, he's good with calling me back to discuss my ratty issues. I'm hoping it was just a reaction to the injection, as it seems to be drying up and shrinking, but I don't want to just let this go without questions. I'll post an update soon! Thanks for everyone's posts and info!

I spoke with the vet and he said that it's very likely a reaction at the injection site, and that small animals are more apt to get a skin reaction than dogs or cats. So, it seems like it's getting harder and smaller...I'll keep an eye on it. Good to know that this can happen sometimes. Thanks all!
