Vin has started making some weird noises. I'm going to drop back into the vet's office on the way to work to see if I can see the vet or get the Baytril today, but I thought I'd post here too in case whatever I'm hearing could mean something other than a URI.
So, Vin's sneezing has actually slowed down quite a bit from before. I was starting to think I was right and it had just been the laundry detergent, but then two things started happening. One, he started making this really low, muffled kind of whining noise, like you would expect to hear a puppy make. The first time I heard it, I actually jumped out of bed because it sounded to me like his head was being pushed down into his hammock and he couldn't breathe. It wasn't nearly as loud as when he would normally squeak (like if Oskar was playing too rough and he'd squeak at him). Sometimes they're playing when he does it, and sometimes I can't tell WHAT was happening because by the time I get out of bed and turn the light on, he's stopped. It's like he can't squeak anymore. All the situations when he would have squeaked (he's kind of a wuss, he squeaks if his brothers plays even a little bit rough with him,) he's making this noise now instead.
The other thing only started last night. Just as I was getting ready to go to bed, Vin started making this... The only way I can describe this noise is, like, those toy microphones you could get as a kid, where you talked into them and they echoed? It sounds like if you smacked one of those with your hand, or blew into it. That scratchy, popping kind of noise, like static. It was coming from his chest but it didn't seem to sync up with his breathing. That lasted for about fifteen minutes or so before it stopped, because one of us fell asleep. It was loud enough that I could hear it clear across my room (the cage is in one corner, and my bed is in the diagonal corner.)
If the vet is in today (he alternates between two offices,) I'm going to see if I can take him in today and just call in sick to work, or if not, if they'll at least let me get a week of Baytril to do us until I can see him. My experience with rat illnesses ends with URIs, though, so I don't know if this could be something else.
