I would do the Valium and see. The only thing with these. Typically these are known as complex seizures in humans. When it happens in humans, they are in a state of impaired consciousness. Seizures are very textbook and the symptoms are what says what they are. Since she is not having a loss of awareness I would question if it is that or a tumor.

Bindi did his head rearing thing, she had some sort of tumor happening because it did affect her eye. I am not sure what other nervous conditions that can exist but as far as seizures go the lip smacking is followed with a impaired state of consciousness.

I found my daughter on the floor blue in the face when she was 14. I did a lot of studying to find out what in we were up against. I even have a book just about written on it. I do know the seizures very well. Epilepsy is our family heirloom. We have been passing it down for generations.

Hmmm...now I am wondering about what the vet means by 'seizure'. Because it's not like she is fitting, she does this as she's runs around, she does it while she's sniffing and investigating and she does it while I'm petting her. Her body doesn't tense up or anything and she is totally 'with it' the whole time. I think he means that there is a small seizure in her brain that is making her mouth do that... but that's all it's affecting at this point...

There are tons of different types. The most common are the tonic clonic seizures. Dropping on the floor and twitching. The others they can have jerks that affect limbs but the lip smacking they generally have an altered state of awareness, they will be in a daze. The seizure wont ever happen in their brain. The way I explained it to my daughters was picture a lightening storm. It strikes over and over in the brain, each part that it hits will trigger a different reaction which is when you see hand moving, screams, lungs not working, twitching. The neurons get over electrified and they basically misfire causing an over load in electrical charges in the brain. It is some neuro issue, but I cannot see it being a seizure but valium is a good test because if it does not stop it, then you have your answer. Rectal valium is what is used in humans to stop seizures that are going on to long. It will stop just about any seizure and prevent others from happening for a little while.
