One of my TAS boys, Finn who is around a year and a half is having some resp issues. My initial thought was just a standard URI so I got some baytril for him. And of course he has decided to be super difficult and refuse to take the meds in anything (which I am still working on :giggle: ). So I decided to give up on trying to get him to take it and attempted the rat burrito method this resulted in him being so worked up his nose started bleeding bright red drops of blood. My immediate worry is polyps :( So I am still giving him baytril but I'm worried that it won't help with whatever is causing the nose bleeds. Any suggestions or advice is appreciated.

I wish i had some for you. I have a boy who used to fight me constantly, he has slowed down a bit. I can at least give meds without having to wrap him up. Well wishes for him.

I have had that happen every once in awhile...breaking blood vessels in the nose causing this scary rush of blood. Keep working on getting the baytril tasty enough to take from the syringe. His brother Keiran also has a URI but he loooves his tasty syringe.

I'm going grocery shopping as soon as class is over to buy all kinds of tasty foods. For some reason Finn has never warmed up to a syringe even when it just has ensure in it.

Fingers crossed for your sweetie.
My Artemis gets nosebleeds as well, not very often about every couple of weeks. The vet can't figure out what it is but since she's been on Baytril she hasn't bled. It's been almost a month now.

Oooh good luck!! Is it the real stuff or the generic? My rats were brand-happy with cool whip :)

It's just the generic stuff, he doesn't know name brand stuff exists...we just won't tell him other wise :giggle:

My boy Theo was picky about the food I would mask and I couldn't feed him his baytril/doxy consistently enough so I decided to go back to the syringe.

I just put him on the table and put on a pair of gloves to protect my hands from getting scratched. Then lift him with one hand and syringe in the other. I just do one squirt at a time and wait about 1-2 seconds in between and keep it up until it's all gone. He always tries to push away the syringe but it doesn't stop me. The dosage is 0.5 cc.

He doesn't like it but it's over in about 20-30 seconds and then I let him run around and he's fine. And I'll give him a small treat as a reward afterwards.

I got tired of wasting medicine and feeding him food with tons of sugar or in such large amounts just to mask the medicine.

Luckily the cool whip is working. I usually use the method you outlined above for difficult rats but the issue was when Finn got worked up (which happened while trying to force feed meds) his nose would start to bleed so I had to find another method to avoid the nose bleeds.

I hope he feels better and keeps eating his Cool Whip "treat"

Amanda, could you take a pic of him? Soo curious to see how he grew up since Keiran and he looked a lot alike as babies :)

He's such a shy boy so the pics aren't great.
