I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but never let it be said that rats aren't intelligent creatures.

A few of you know that a couple of weeks ago I was on a daily and nightly vigil for Chance. He had (and likely still has) all the signs of PT, failed the Cheerios test miserably (as a psychologist, I would say he rejected the premise of the test by not even trying to grab it with his front paws). At the lowest point he kept falling over, had to be dropper fed Ensure (and most of it wound up on him instead of in him). He did seem to perk up a bit about nine days ago, and didn't want to eat by dropper, preferring to lick it up in a bowl, so my boyfriend Tim (who is an angel), and I decided I should still go up to my grandmother's for her 93rd birthday (never knowing how many more birthdays she will have), and leave it up to Chance whether he'd go or fight like a little demon monkey.

Well, Chance is a demon monkey, without doubt. I thought I could detect some learning in his behavior - he was trying to compensate when he would clean his belly or his lower back by his tail, though most of the time he wound up falling over anyway. He was definitely learning with regards to the Ensure - able to lap it up instead of having to be dropper-fed.

I come back tonight, and what do I find... Mr. Honeycomb, sweet and devoted nursemaid that he is, of course tried to climb up the infirmary cage walls when he heard me come in - and Chance stood up on his hind legs, completely unaided!

Later, I figured I would try feeding him a fresh wild blueberry (brought some from Nana's) - and wouldn't you know it, he held it in his front paws, sat high up on his hind end, and ate it!! He appears to have developed a totally different way of sitting up or standing - his tail is a much heavier balance now, like a kangaroo's when it's not hopping around, firmly planted against the ground. So the result is he stands very tall, whereas most rats would be sitting, but their profile while eating would be very low to the ground. He's able to groom very well too - still has a bit of trouble with his back near the tail, but it's a stellar improvement...

Now he's trying to eat lab blocks too - and he's holding them!! I'm dancing for joy, I can tell you! I know it doesn't eliminate PT as the source, and that he will probably decline at some point, but he's doing so amazingly well right now... I just had to share the joy!

if you haven't medicated him (steroid) and he is improving then its possible he had a stroke, which they can recover from in time. Let's hope this is what Chancy-Man had!!!

He's quite a fighter that little guy. Are these two related to mamarat's three boys from Beaverton?

Mr. Honeycomb is one of their brothers.. Chance is from a different scenario...I think he was the boy in the pink mouse cage.

I'm not sure if he was ever in a pink mouse cage - my understanding of the story (but Lynds can confirm!) is that he came to her pretty much in a shoebox. He'd been intended as a snake's dinner, but for the timely intervention of an aghast girlfriend (guy's snake, he swore he'd feed it chicken guts when he got it, she came home one day to find Chance ready to be fed...).

Mr. Honeycomb is indeed one of the Beaverton Boys, and he's been such a stellar nursemaid. Now that Chance is doing better, his patience is probably frequently tried, but he just lies down contentedly (or completely asleep) while Chance climbs up onto his back, then off, then realizes he did want to be climbing Mount Honeycomb again, repeat until I think most people would scream, lol - but nary a complaint or annoyed feeling from the big manrat. He's a good stabilizer for Chance while he's grooming, and he'll help out a bit with keeping Chance clean. When Chance was still in need of dropper-feeding, Mr. Honeycomb would GLARE at me when I took Chance out, then would welcome him back enthusiastically - nothing for improving rat relations like Ensure-marinated fur... "hold still and let me groom you!" "moooooooooooom....."

I managed to read up on strokes, and the differences between it and PT are so subtle - at least it seems to me. But I think I can say for sure it *is* a stroke, after washing him tonight. Rinsing only does so much for Ensure on the fur, so I decided to give him a very easy bath - essentially a head-above-water dunking in nice lukewarm water, a quick and gentle shampoo, and even gentler rinsing. After I got him wet, I put him down on the floor of the bathtub for ten seconds or so while I got the shampoo on my hands (only pet shampoo, obviously). He was very pronounced in repeated stumblings to his right side - it looked like his right leg just kind of gave out repeatedly. He didn't seem perturbed, and so I quickly finished his bath then made sure he was close to bone-dry with a loving towelling.

And of course, now that I'm looking in hindsight, yet more of the symptoms are noticeable - it was his right eye that got all porphy in those first few terrifying days, and it looks like his right side is the pronounced weaker side.

One thing I can't figure out - if he's having problems on his right side, or any side as a result of a stroke, would that affect his ability to lick? Tim put a bit of doughnut sugar on his finger as a treat for Chance being so good during the bath, but Chance didn't seem able to lick it - he'd only bite down with medium pressure and hold on.

The symptoms are very similar and sometimes very hard to tell the difference between stroke and PT. Except, that with stroke, a rat can make a full recovery unlike PT. All the symptoms except the last one sound more like stroke. The last one sounds like PT although, I'm sure it could very well be from the stroke, all depending which area of the brain it affected.
Mr. Honeycombs sounds like a dream rat...you have a beautiful duo there.
