Dr Brieger (Victoria's vet) is in surgery right now, but he will call the lab after and they will get back to me. They mostly wanna know how much blood they need to take (poor baby) and I want to know $$$...

ETA - Rereading, I'm thinking that I don't really want to know but that's a different story... :giggle:

Weight day today... surprise! Cabotine has gone up again - to 725g. :emb: She is now officially heavier than my ratosaurus, who went down to 724 today. I have put her down on the floor for walks most evenings this week, and feeding them lots and lots of veggies (a bit of carrots, yes, but lots of cauliflower and brocoli, with some spinach and parsley) before dinner time, but it doesn't look like it did any good.

I called the clinic last night since they never called me back - I will be hearing on blood testing on Monday (yop, they forgot). In the meantime, she remains the same independent, curious, happy and apparently hungry girl...

"Only" a 6 gram gain this week. Then again, today's Friday. Maybe providing hay helped - I sure am continuing to do so as she loves nibbling on it and it should do more good than harm.

Apparently, getting testing done for thyroid problems on rat requires too much blood... 2 cc. I guess all I am left with is low fat / low carb foods, hay, and exercise.

I took then out on the balcony after work one day this week because their room was way too hot (it was 29C in there!!!) and the girls didn't seem to mind too much, eventhough it was not their favorite place to be (I live close to an airport...). Chester and Pollux though both hated it. When it was time to have them come back inside, I simply opened the door and called them into the kitchen - Cabotine had a blast! Apparently, she loves walking on a ceramic floor :giggle: Guess where she will be taken out for exercising from now on...

I completely agree - but we are all mystified. And she does want to eat - she will run to treats when I give them. Of course, her portions are smaller...

oh my goodness your poor girl.
I must say though that pancake picture is apsolutely adorable..what a pretty lady.
I would deffinatly say blood work is the best bet..and id be worried she'd have diabeties at this point? :(

I'm afraid she'll get to diabeties but right now, she moves quite good - actually, I put her in my guinea pigs cage and she chases them! She's still amazingly fast... but she's only just over a year old...

Making sure she gets plenty of fibre and few simple carbs will help prevent diabetes. Here's hoping her weight gain stops or at least stops.

She gained below her weekly 10 to 20 g this week - and she's getting a lot of fiber indeed with the hay.

I looked in the cage as I was typing this, just to see her go down to the last level, straight to the hay! I dug out my old hay wheel I had gotten for my guinea pigs and put it up today, so not only will she be having hay, but she will have to stand up and work to get it... she actually seems to like that!

My younger rats love hay... they're always chewing through my Jiggley Piggley bags to get a snack. Just make sure you avoid alfalfa as it's not digestible by rats and is too high in carbs to boot.
