Hello! I rat proofed all my room, and they love to roam around but there is this one area where I have some cables that are connected to my aquarium light, heater and filter, that the rats can reach. I would like to know if there is a way of making them not want to chew on the cables, like maybe getting something spicy on them? some strong flavour or natural repellent? If so, which one? I could remove the cables but since they are connected to the hearter and sometimes my rats get several hours outside I didn't want to have to do that cuz it will mess with the temperature of the aquarium. Thank you in advanced!

I use thumbtacks to hold the wires up but my rats just don’t really take an interest in my power bar by the desk but I watch them anyways while they are out always

You could try a biter apple spray sold to keep pets off things …… but it may not work

The best and only reliable thing you can do it make sure there is no possible way they can get access to the cord - not only would that be expensive for you but it could harm your ratties

You also need to make sure it is impossible for them to have access to the aquarium and any animals living in it - rats will kill other animals.

I would suggest using coroplast panels to cordon off that area so they have no possible way of accessing the cords or aquarium

Like SQ said, it would actually be better and easier to just block off the area. You could use a tall cardboard box to block it as well. Just make sure they can't jump up it, or crawl under it. I personally wouldn't take the chance on putting something on the cords because one good bite is all they'd need to shock themselves. That would be very bad. They are too tiny for that amount of electricity, and it would likely kill them. You could also just cut a hard tubing meant for conduit, and put the cords in them, then make a small plastic box for the power strip to be housed in, where it wouldn't be seen or harmed by the ratties.
