OK so he will be losing the eye :sad3: Vet put him on Baytril for the infection and Meloxicam for the pain. Other than the eye he's in great health, he's currently chugging away at his water bottle and eating a Cheerio :)

I was a very relieved after talking to the dr. He seems to know what he's doing and he was very good with Algernon (who immediately hopped onto the guy's shoulder when taken from his carrier haha).

Still need to set up the surgery, which will most likely be on Friday...hopefully he can stay out of pain until then :(

Quite a few of us have been through enucleations with our ratties. Do a search in Health for enucleation and you might get some posts that help you see/hear what to expect.

WOW. Stayed up til 7:00am to give Algernon his 2nd dose of baytril (I knew if I went to bed I wouldn't be able to wake up again to give it to him) and when I got up at 4:00pm to give him his pain meds, the swelling was almost GONE and the discoloration is down by more than half! You can actually tell that it's supposed to be an eye! :joy:

He might not need a removal then!!

That's what I'm hoping, gonna see what the doc thinks about it, but I can't believe how much better it got in that short of a space of time! Maybe the infection just looked a lot worse than it really was....

Was it all yellow inside his eyeball or red?

Red, going back to normal now. Even better now than it was earlier

Started off as just a tiny bit milky late Halloween night (hardly noticeable, just barely able to see it if you were in the right light). The next morning it was completely white and by that night it was starting to get reddish. The next morning (yesterday, when we went to the vet) it was red and now it's getting back to just slightly milky with a tiny bit of red left. Blood or porph?

Lets start with what colour your rats eyes are normally? Bella was a pink-eyed white double rex.

Milky white all over like Bella?

Then the red came i (bleeding into occular bulb)

That's where the fun really began. The eyeball had been scratched and had ruptured...we went through months of changes before the eye died, shrank and she was blind.

Did they give you drops or ointment to use on the eye and/or oral antibiotics to prevent infection?

If I saw a pic I could give you a better idea of what you are dealing with here, but right now I am just guessing off of your description.

Your pictures describe EXACTLY what's going on with Algernon, only his eyes are black (idk how much of a difference that makes, if any). I've been giving him the Baytril but idk what kind of ointment I could use...I don't want to make it worse and I don't want to hurt him so I'm scared to try anything unless I'm 100% sure, especially since the Baytril is going so well (don't wanna backtrack).

However, when I checked this morning his eye was no longer red. Still just very slightly bulging and still milky and just generally weird looking. He's already blind in that eye, the vet says it's destroyed from the swelling so he's not going to regain vision whether it heals or not.

Also found out yesterday that we won't be able to pay mortgage this month if I take him in for surgery...trying to see if vet will set up payment plan but they're iffy because I'm new to them...if you know of a good ointment/drops that I can definitely use please let me know!

Sorry, still trying to find the cable to my camera so I can upload pictures from it.
