So we had to move up our appt for G'Kar and Sam to tomorrow instead of Friday. We're getting some snow and would like to avoid being out there in a storm.

And with the thoughts of that bill in my head and the emotional roller coaster I am on, I found something out that just puts me into a spin...

Lenir is making noises, yup you guessed it. ANOTHER URI here.

So tomorrow, I have G'Kar, Lenir and Sam to take in, all $65 each to walk in the door. Then G'kars meds (2 or 3) and Sams Baytril and Zythro, and now Baytril for Lenir....

Thankfully, I still have the 3 bottles of doxy unmixed to help with the costs tomorrow, that lone would be another $90. But whatever, its money, comes and goes.

My only issue? These boys are going to be the death of me, Im feeling so overwhelmed with two of them having URI's and G'Kar going downhill so fast, considering I just lost Stewart to this on the 4th. I keep feeling like I am going to loose these boys too :(

Seriously, after these boys, I am done with owning rats.

We're back. Ok, Sam is actually BETTER! The doxy/baytril combo was working he just needs it longer. We have another 6weeks of both. Sam LOVED her! He sat in her hands and burxed away while being examined. She asked why he was making funny noises :giggle:
G'kar is being dosed every 8 hours now instead of 12 with 0.5cc of Lasix. We are looking into a betablocker and inhibitor but she will call back tomorrow about that.

Lenir needed baytril for his URI but she didn't check or prescribe anything for him. She did however give Sam 12 weeks of Baytril, I wonder what I'll do with that much extra?? ;)
I am very pleased, I had enough left over to buy Fate a mew muzzle for walks!!

Gah, when it rains, it pours. Hang in there m'dear! :grouphug:

Boyo, I feel your pain. I'm currently dealing with a toothless hamster, another hamster that's been hemorrhaging blood from her lady-bits, a rat with a rapidly growing lump, and a megacolon scare with my baby rat.

Sending good vibes to your crew! :cuddle:

If you need anymore doxy sent your way let me know

Thank you! I do have 12weeks worth for Lenir/Sam, as Stewart didnt get to use it. I was hoping to go with Zithro for Sam, but only if my vet can write me an Rx for it. I simply cannot afford her prices. Thankfully the doxy you sent the last time was enough to dose them until Stewart passed.

Or, I was thinking of 6weeks of doxy for both boys, and asking her for Baytril but I know shes going to be a stick about it and want to redo the doxy. I have never seen a vet so bad for hiddens costs and refusing to go with cheaper solutions. I mean she's good, but not that darn good lol

I can't even count how many times I've said: "I'm done with rats".
(((hugs)))

This is my second time saying it, the first time I went 4 years without owning rats lol Days like today I'd like to go back to just the dog and cat, sadly. I don't mind them needing vet trips, but all at once? Com'mon boys!! And all the same thing I just lost a rat too... just very upsetting.

I know ... I have 11 rats and 9 are presently on meds ....

Can you get doxy pills or capsules and inj horse baytril (to give orally)?
They are more economical.

Ratty Momma sent me doxy capsules and that was amazing  But I am not sure if my vet will give me a Rx for it? She demanded that I go with the doxy from her supplier, I cannot see her giving up that money and allowing me to go with a pharmacy. But thank you for that, I will bring that up with her!

Where would one get inj horse baytril? From the vet? I think she charges $13 for 6 weeks of baytril.

We buy the doxy capsules and a bottle of horse baytril from the vet.
They carry the doxy capsules or pills and order the horse baytril in for us.

Aw, I'm sorry you are going through such a rough time. That is almost exactly how it went with me and my past boys, I sympathize greatly! That's why I only have two now, and am keeping it at two.
Hoping your rattums respond well to the meds and get better soon!! :getwell:

Its funny, I've always larger groups years back, we did vet trips and all that jazz. Ive always had 12+, one time over 20 in my care. I would see a sick rat come up maybe once every few months, most never got sick until they were old and it was their time to go. Now, I have 8.5, and everyone is sick it seems. Its funny because my rats seemed to be more healthy on home mix and pine shavings :crazy3: Although the Aspen we bought has had a snowball effect, everyones been getting sick since I used it :(

I'm sorry to hear that everyone is getting sick at once. If your vet knew what you were thinking, would she prefer to give you a better deal and get some of your business... or find that you just stop owning pets?

Rats are so unpredictable. For the first three years as a rat mama, it seemed like someone was always sick. Then I had a six-month period where I lost ten of them. Now (touch wood, this cannot last) I have had a few months where nobody got anything serious or mysterious. But I will have to be prepared for the next set of bad times when my crew gets older.

Too bad that you could not move to NB.

Im so sick of this place, I have thought about moving to NB actually! But, that would require money and as long as I own rats, I'll be full of love and broke to my last penny :p If Joe found a job somewhere, we'd move for sure. Ive been living away from family for so long, it doesnt matter where I live really!

I guess I did good though, I had a dry spell of sickness from April 2010 to October 2010 when G'Kar got sick, but its been thing after thing since then. And all my rats range from 1y to 20m :(

Positive note, Ash has stopped sneezing :) (9weeks old boy who had bad wet sneezies when we took him in).

I can totally relate too. With the benefits of having our fur babies come the drawbacks. Vets survive of our love for our animals and know we will pay whatever we need to so they can be treated.
One of the drugs used here by the only small animal specialist we have is around $100 for 6mls (online) but she charges $100 per ml for it.

See thats the thing, my old vet was clueless but she always wrote Rx for me, as she says the clinic is overcharging. Jezz years ago my really old vet would write down what I need and send me to my doctor (usually for antibiotics) and my doctor had no issue signing the Rx for me, then it would cost me $1 lol But that was back when I had a housefull. Now I'm back to paying a large mark up.
We're off with the boys in an hour, will update when we get back. Joe and Leah are coming with, which helps the stress some.
