You know, I tried to look into pet insurance, but I couldn't find one that would cover rodents. How much would it be per month.

You are so right Jen they fight through adversity except when they feel really bad. I mean Pearl had a URI and she still played and bugged and loved all through it. They are tough little things.

Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) covers "exotics" to include rats. I pay $8.65/month per rat man. Be careful though when applying. They have a 2 month freeze on insurance payouts when you first sign up.

That means that they won't cover any costs incurred during this time.

When I signed up; I told them about Jerry's "pre-existing condition". The outcome was that they placed that pre-existing condition in his insurance policy and would not pay any treatments stemming from it.

I spent almost $800 on Jerry when he got sick and I never saw a dime. They also do not cover what they call "wellcare treatments". That means neuters, spays, annual exams or lab tests.

If you are beginning to wonder if they cover anything... yes, they have a decent list of things they cover. I do believe that they will pay a significant amount of Basil's treatment but I will not know until I submit the claim form. I'll let you know the outcome.

You may want to have them send you documentation on what they do cover before you sign up. Rats fall, among other animals, under their exotic pet plan.

Their customer care department can be reached at 1-800-540-2016.

I am hoping that, somewhere along the line, the demand for exotic animal care coverage will increase and give our animals the same divine rights they all seem to bestow on dogs and cats. I'm telling you; there is no "pre-existing condition" BS for them. You can sign them up today and have coverage immediately for whatever Bowzer ate that required major surgery for $5000. UGH!!!! It's enough to make you sick. :sick2: :laugh4:

Basil update. The swelling has decreased significantly since yesterday. He still limps but has moments where he walks on the foot. :)

I began with both the Baytril and Meloxicam treatments as soon as I got home, from the vet, on Friday night and it took less than 12 hours for the meds to help.

He is not out of the "rat house" (dog house) yet but I am now entertaining the strong possibility that he is suffering from a sprain and not from a tumor.

I will keep him on the meds for as long as prescribed. You can't be too careful with your little four footers.

Keep your "paws" crossed and I will keep you updated.

Thank you all for your support. It is a great comfort to me when I am suffering over my little guys and their woes in life. I would rather these things happen to me than to my rats. :love6:

that's fantastic news that the swelling has gone down! :D
thinking of you and your rattie men-hope he makes a full recovery! ^_^

:woohoonaner: that he's having such such a good reaction to the meds already! That sounds really hopeful that he won't need anything more drastic. Keep on improving Basil!

Good luck to your sweet man. I hope the meds keep working. :tumkiss:

Sven's leg was amputated and he did really well, still remained alpha in his cage.

The leg is now practically back to normal and he is walking on it. He is not yet back to powergroom status but Ben is having a harder time with cleaning any stray Baytril off of his face. :D

Basil likes his Baytril and wants to clean it off himself...

The meloxicam treatments end on Sunday so I will keep a close eye on him. The Baytril treatments end a week from Friday and I will then take him back to the vet for a recheck.

:love6::heart: the little noses :heart::love6:

update

The swelling in Basil's foot is gone and his royal pudginess appears to be losing weight with the diet I have him on!

He continues to love his meds and his little nose is always waiting for me when med time rolls around. :)

Keep your fingers crossed for my little man. The meloxicam treatments end on Sunday and I will then be monitoring him very closely for any signs of re-swelling. Such a hearty little camper... :love6:
