Ok, so as of.. right now, Emma's neck lump started oozing. It wasn't growing and then recently it started up again. I have been checking on it lots, and noticed yesterday that the skin on top seemed darker, and now, there was a greenish ooze. Well, I applied a bit of pressure, and it oozed a lot! So, I got a warm washcloth and put more pressure... and when I expected liquidy green puss, I got a thick, pistachio coloured substance. Like, thicker than creamed cheese. And it doesn't smell... I always read that abscesses reeked!

So, it seems like all the stuff is out of there now. She has a hole... and I am not seeing any immediate flesh, like something pushing through. The dark skin is there, it feels tough.. kind of like a large scab. Emma is so scrambly she wont let me poke around too much (especially the oozing ordeal she's just gone through)

I don't have any meds now, but I can hopefully get her to a vet soon. One thing we DO have here is saline... should I ask my mother in law to help me flush it out?

It is squeezed, flushed and polysporined. She's a little grumpy with me right now but I'm sure a chocolate chip will change that.

Thanks for the quick reply, Jo. I didn't realize that abscess innards could be so thick and... surprisingly not disgusting.

They come in all shapes and sizes and smells. lol

Next time, don't put polysporin, it promotes healing so that means it will close it up before it's fully cleaned out. You want an abscess to heal from the inside out essentially.

Yeah I wasn't sure about that... polysporin is just for lighter wounds? My mother in law slapped it on before I realized it. Emma is doing her best getting it off, so I'm not too worried about it having a lot of time to start doing its job LOL. I know for tomorrow, though.

Ya, and even with the lighter wounds, don't really need the stuff and as you can see, it only makes the rats want to bother with the site anyways.

When my little man Jerry had his abscess surgery, they had me flushing it out with Betadine and water. I was told to put 1-2 drops of betadine into a dish and then add enough water to make it an "iced tea" color. I then sucked it up into a syringe and squirted it into the open holes.

He hated it but it worked wonders! :)

I don't know if your little lady needs that. You may want to call your vet and ask.

Nevertheless, I wanted you to have the information for future use.
